My dog got hurt at the Dog groomers... WHAT do I do?

I have a 4 year old Maltese. She lives w/my mom now cause my old landlord didnt allow dogs. Anyway, my mom brought her for grooming at the usual place. They put two bows in her ears. My mom today (a week later) wanted to shower her, so she went to take the bows out and before she could she saw that her poor ears were all bloodied. I guess the rubber band bow they put was wrapped so tight it actually ripped the skin and there was blood/the skin was open!!Chat Icon

My mom called me and told me this, she was frantic, she didnt know what to do. She went back to the groomers and takled to the manager and demanded an answer. The manager proceeded to tell my mom it was her fault, that the bows are only meant for decoration and she shouldnt have left them for a week, rather taken them out the same day/max. next day. OK maybe he was right, but they didnt explicitly tell my mom this, and she honeslty didnt know. My mom is still insistant that it was tied TOO tight and the rubber was pulling in the hair/skin. My mom was asking if there was any ointment he could give her to help soothe it and he opened the register threw a $20 bill at her and told her to buy hydrogen peroxide and "deal with it" that they werent responsible.

MeanwhileI called the vet asap and described the situation, asking them for advice/what to buy... they refused to give me any medical advice over the phone without actually seeing the dog in person. (I called at 2pm and they closed at 3pm). SO I couldnt make it and Sunday they close at 12, I cant make it again. The earliest I could go was monday, and maybe not even then. I wish they could tel lme what to do in the meantime!!!!

Anybody here have any advice on what to do/to put on her poor ears/skin??
Obviously I will never let my mom take her to grooming there anymore. Im so sad I hate to hear that she is in any pain.

Why not call another vet that's open 24 hours?

I cant believe what I am reading!!!!!! I would call the BBB on them .. I agree the bows should nver be in more than a day or so but she SHOULD HAVE BEEN TOLD!!!!! And those MTHREFIN vets you called should go to HELL!! How dare they pull that crap.. Just to get money out of you.. The dogs leg wasnt broken !!!! He wasnt gushing with blood all over the place .. His bows were left in too long .. I am LIVID more about the Vets ... Find a better vet and try to develop a relationship with them so they will never do that to you..

I would put bacetracin on it and peroxide like they told you .. I am sure it will get better in a day or so.. Poor puppy Chat Icon Keep us posted Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Honestly they would not tell your mom to take out the bows. My dogs always get bandanas but no one tells me to remove them. I am the one who realizes that the bandanas can choke them, it's my job as the owner to think about what is safe or not for my dog. And so we remove the bandanas as soon as they come home, after we have taken a picture.

I would be very worried about the circulation being cut off. I would suggest you take your dog to a vet asap. Hope she is ok.Chat Icon

I dont blame the vets for not wanting to give advice though, b/c they would not want to be held liable if the dog's ears were lacking circulation.

I would wash the ears gently, mixing HALF WATER AND HALF PEROXIDE. Straight peroxide can damage their skin, the vet told us that! Try to avoid water getting into the ear canal. Then I would put a DAB of bacitracin and do this 2 times a day. My dog's groomer cut his ear once and our vet suggested we do this. He healed in a few days.

Goobster you have alot of great points but they SHOULD tell people to take them out.. There are owners who just might not realize it.. Not because they are bad owners just because they assume they are safe..

I have called my vet about different things and they give me advice over the phone sometimes with out having to come in and spend $$$.. I dont know how bad it was and yes if the dogs ear lost circulation then yes she should bring him in .. But it souinded like it was just sore and cut they way she described it .. Believe me I am the first one to run my dog to the Vet but they could have given her advice until she could get there on monday KWIM?

Does your vet have an after hours number? Our vet recommends a near by animal hospital for after hours visits and emergencies.

I think as a pet owner you should know what is good and not for your pet...No one tells me everything I have to do with my pup, I either just know or read up on things.

As for the vet, there are huge legal ramifications for giving out medical advice over the phone. Most vets will not do this. Mine doesn't and I don't expect them to. If its an emergency there are plenty of 24hr vets.

Re: My dog got hurt at the Dog groomers... WHAT do I do?

Thanks for the replies. My mom said she put hydrogen peroxide on it and she is gonna keep me updated until tuesday. If its better by tuesday thats great, if not im gonna take her to the vet.

I really feel like the vet just wants $$$. For me to waslk in there its $50, just to walk in. Why couldnt he just give me advice on the phone?? Whats the big deal? I mean I call my daughters PED. and she gives me advice on what to do!!! Its ridiculous.

When it comes to the groomer, Im giving a horrible review online and might even call BBB.

I hope my baby gets better quick! Thanks for the advice.

I agree about your groomer.. I have a Maltese myself .. My groomer puts the bow in everytime.. My groomer never twists it tight enough to cause damage to my dog, As a groomer I do feel that they should be held responsible for causing this kind of damage to the dog.. THEY should know better as well..Come on do you know how tight that must of been!!!!!!!! I take my dogs bow out because I know it bothers her and I get a headache looking at it in there.. But I am sorry I dont feel it makes a person a bad owner if they just dont realize it.. We all are learning as we go along too.. Just like babies .. I make mistakes all the time .. I am sure this will never happen again .. Good luck and keep us posted..
