HELP!!! How Much Chocolate Will Hurt a Dog?
UGH!!! We're moving today and I'm running around like a lulu.... so of course my wonderful dog got into my tied garbage bag and ate fudge that I threw out!!! I'm freaking out. I took napkins and wiped down the inside of his mouth to get whatever was left. I don't know how much he ate. Is he going to be okay? I feel terrible and today is his first birthday

I would keep watching him. Maybe call the vet just to be sure there isn't anything specific you should be looking for.

I would call the vet and ask. A small amount can harm a dog. It all depends on the dog. I hope all is ok.

This really depends on 2 things - the type of chocolate, and the size of the doggie -- unsweetened (baker's) chocolate has wayyy more of the toxic chemical (I forget the name) than say milk chocolate... An average 50lb dog would have to eat about 9 oz of chocolate to have a bad reaction (that's from memory but I think its reasonably accurate?)  Definitely call your vet, and keep an eye on the pooch, I hope he's OK!!!! Mine has found chocolate in the garbage once or twice also and she's been FINE, no problems at all, hopefully yours is ok today too!!!

Just keep an eye on him -
My Yorkie jumped on the coffee table the other day and ate at least a handful of hershey kisses ........She paid for it for the next 2 days by puking her guts up ........but other than an upset stomach, she was fine. -

when my dog ate a whole box of girl scout samoa cookies, I called the emerg. animal line and the lady told me a dog Sandy's size (about 23 lbs) could eat 20oz of chocolate before it is dangerous, so that is ALOT of chocolate

oh my! i'm sorry! give the vet a call just to be safe and to ease your mind but like other posters have said - they need a lot of chocolate to have a bad reaction so just keep an eye out on him. he'll probably either get the runs or throw up.

I'm sorry..that happened to us once too! she got to chocolate oreo snacks..she was fine..the vet said she would have to eat a lot to hurt her..but I would definately call your vet...she should be fine

It depends on the kind of chocolate the dog ate. Bakers chocolate it more toxic than regular milk chocolate. And, it depends on how much the dog weighs. Yogi ate an entire TRAY of brownies and he is 55 pounds. I called the vet and he said that he should be fine but would be pooping a lot for the next couple of days. He seemed fine but he pooped a lot in the backyard (never in the house).

If it was a small dog your vet might recommend making him/her throw up. Fudge is extremely rich and can be very harmful to little dogs.
