Passing Down Name to Twins?

So the dr said at our last appt that it's a possibility our identical twins are boys which is so exciting! But we have a bit of a dilemma also. My husband has his father's and grandfather's name and is a III. He wants one of them to get his whole name and be the IV. I don't think it's really fair to the other twin that isn't named after him though we're going to give the other twin probably my father's name. I don't even mind giving one twin my husband's first name, but I would want to do a different middle name so he's not the IV, he just shares the same first name. Did anyone else go through the same thing where there was pressure to pass down a name?

I already suggested giving one my husband's first name and the other his middle name, but he said no. So I don't know what we're going to do. I just don't want one twin to feel less special about his name.

We're in the same position as you!!

My husband's name is Joseph and so is his father and grandfather, however, they all have different middle names. We are having fraternal Chat Icon Chat Icon and we want to name the first one that is born Joseph. Our second born son is going to have my father's first name as his middle name. I know my dad is ecstatic about it!!

A few people have said to me "is the second born going to feel slighted since he's not named after his dad?". We don't believe so. When it comes time for their baptism, we want them both to have their own godparents so it shows individualism. Maybe my sister can be godmother to the second born and my best friend to the first born.

I hope that helped! Chat Icon

Thanks! Yeah, I don't really think it's too bad if the first born just gets his first name because it's not as big a deal. I more have a problem with him getting the first/middle name combo and being the IV because that's passing down the family name just to one. Giving just the first name with a different middle name switches it up a little and doesn't make it as huge a deal. It's just frustrating because I really am going to have to get my husband to change his mind, and his family thinks it would be nice to pass down the whole name, but I really don't want to. Of course, maybe next week we'll find out it's girls, and this won't be a problem anymore!Chat Icon

Re: Passing Down Name to Twins?

I just typed out a super long response and then my internet went down! Chat Icon

I have Chat Icon Chat Icon.

DH's grandfather was George V.
DH's grandfather was George C.
DH is George M.

We were team green. We decided that if we had Chat Icon Chat Icon, baby A would be named George C.

Baby B would be named Hunter M.
DH is a passionate hunter. The name Hunter is very special to him. M. is DH's middle name; it is also my father and brother's first name.

In my opinion, both names are EQUALLY special and have EQUALLY significant meaning to us.

So far, only 1 person has made a (rude) comment saying that Georgie will always be special bc of her name. I told her to f-off. Chat Icon

Not an easy decision, but we are very glad we chose the names that we did.

Thanks for your response! I think it's great what you did with the names. I don't mind giving the first born his first name, but I don't know if that'll be good enough for my husband b/c he wants to give the middle name too since it's tradition. Hopefully I can get him to just agree to the first name.

FWIW, I would have used DH's name too if that's what he wanted to do. In his family, switching the middle name is the tradition.

It took me some time to come up with Hunter's name but once I did, I loved it so much I was almost Chat Icon for 2 boys just so I could have my Hunter. Chat Icon

Also, we didn't tell anyone the names that we picked out ahead of time bc I knew people would make comments. I did tell my mom Chat Icon. Apparently right after the boys were born, my mom heard a nurse walking down the hall and someone asked her which twin she had with her. She said Hunter and that's how my mom found out that we had 2 boys! Chat Icon

Re: Passing Down Name to Twins?

my vote would be for your DH to have his way. My DH wants to name his first son after his dad, which is coincidentally his name too. I did ask if we could switch the middle name, but this means A LOT to him, so I have to give it to him. JMHO
