WWYD????

So 2-3 days a week my neighbor gets my daughter off the bus. Today the kids came home with their report card, my neighbor took it out from her backpack and read it. I asked my daughter if she had asked him what it said and she know he took it out on his own and just started reading it. I hadn't even seen it yet and he didn't say anything about it even being in there when I picked her up.

Would you say anything?

Would you let it go?

Even if you didn't say anything would you be annoyed?

I would be really annoyed. I took my neighbor's kids home on the day they got their report card and I would never think of looking! In fact, I told them they had to wait to look until they got home with their mom and dad.

Re: WWYD????

What?! I would be INCREDIBLY pizzed! My guess is it was addressed to you and DH, so basically, your mail was opened. That's a pretty huge offense in my opinion! I would DEFINITELY say something!

Re: WWYD????

Sounds like a nosy neighbor to me! Is his/her child in your daughter's class? Maybe he/she was comparing? Not cool.

Yes our kids are in the same class. I know he is going to say, that he was reading his son's and my daughter wanted her read but she said she didn't ask.

I would say something but more importantly I'd want to teach my daughter to say something if she isn't comfortable.

Re: WWYD????

I'd PROBABLY assume that since he was reading his sons he felt badly that she didn't know what hers said and wanted to make her feel included. But he definitely might have been a nosy bot too.

I would probably say nothing because I don't care who knows what my kids grades are.. I share them anyway. BUT if it bothered me I would probably say "You know.. I really like going over the report card with my daughter - it gives me the chance to put her grades in context with her behavior at home. I know you were trying to be nice, but next time maybe you could leave it for me to go over her grades with her??" In a really nice way.

It honestly would depend upon what his intentions were...

Last year I watched 2 of the girls' friends after school. When they'd come home from school the girls would all be excited to see their report cards. I'd look at the girls and we'd look at the other girls too...

Perhaps he just wanted to include her....

I agree. I spoke to him and this is the case. Though I didn't like it but at 5 she cannot understand that she had to wait until I was home.

This was the case, though I don't doubt the nosy part too. But all is good in the 'hood' so to speak now.

Thank you all for the replies.

Re: WWYD????

Thats weird IMO. I find report cards to very private so I would never open someone else's childs even if the kid wanted me to. Kids could easily be told "No we have to wait for your Mom, it's addressed to her" and leave it at that. If the child persists, put it away and still tell them no. That's what I would do if it someone else's child, even a niece or nephew. I would try to be less pizzed if you think she wasn't just a nosy person who you want to continue to trust your child with but I'd say that in the future you'd prefer she not open it even if you child wants to.

I have to disagree about the 5 yr old waiting though. I think she could wait if told properly. If she was told she can't eat an entire box of cookies, she could accept that, right? Would the neighbor give her the entire box anyway even if the child persisted? I'm not assuming about your child in particular so I don't mean it as an attack, I just mean that there are certain things that do not have to be up for debate with a child when doing so goes against what you as the parent want. What about next report card? It's an invasion of privacy IMO and bc you sounded uhappy about it too makes it not right, regardless of what kind of student your DD is. At least that's my opinion.

I totally get your point! He is a good man, nosy but a good man, he just felt bad saying no to her he said. He felt that it was a kindgarten report card so it wasn't a big deal. I think it is, BUT I understand his point. He had said if they were older then it he would never have done it. He was making a big fuss over his son's and she had that puppy dog look so he caved. He apologized. I don't like it. I can't wait for our district to go paperless to avoid this, but we are neighbors and our kids are super close so I am not going to start world war 3 of it, though I would've the other night. I was so heated. From now on I will just be more concious of the date when report cards are coming home and send her to after care that day Chat Icon
