Teenager/Parent Vent from my Cruise
I don't understand how parents can go on vacation and take the leash off their kids and let them run wild on a cruise ship.
We just got back from a great RCCL week cruise of the Western Caribbean. Unfortunately, we got a cabin with the adjoining door to the cabin next door, but it is locked and has to be unlocked by RCCL to open for both parties.
The very first afternoon - we were still in port - 3:30pm - someone on the other side of the door is trying to open the door handle and throwing themselves at the door to push it open, we hear voices, it sounds like teen boys. DH goes next door, knocks onthe door, explains we are next door, the door is locked, please don't try to open it, they stop
Two days later - 10:30 pm at night - same thing - trying to open the door. You're kidding, right? DH yells at the door - it's locked,I think we talked about this.
Thursday afternoon - more door opening attempt. I stop by the Customer Relations desk to see if it's spring break and there are college kids in the room next door - no - one adult and one minor. I told them - no not really - they tell me the parents are one in each room with one of each of the minor "children". I told them that's nice but clearly they switched that around - could RCCL speak to the parents that their kids are being irritating. - they say of course.
Friday night - 930 - I didn't feel well - too much sun. I was sleeping - DH was in Casino or at the show, I don't know. Someone starts banging hard on the adjoining door, sounds like they are slamming their body into the door. I get dressed, go next door, knock, of course, no one answers the door. I called Guest Relations, they said they would send security - who I hear knock on their door about 3 minutes after I call. 20 minutes later - it starts again. Now I've lost my mind. I go down to Guest Relations, they call the cabin, at first no one answers. She calls again, asks for the adult, who, of course, is not there. One of the teens is there and she tells him she is sending security again to remove them from the room and find their parents due to the multiple complaints (I guess I wasn't the only one). I asked GR what happens with these parents - she said - these parents have told her "we're on vacation, I get on the ship and I don't want to to chase my kids around - boys will be boys, they aren't hurting anyone"
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
I happened to also find out they same kids were caught stealing the appointment book from the Adventures Office (where you can plan your next trip).
It's a good thing that DH and I never found out who these kids parents were.
Please do not get me wrong, there were ALOT of kids on this cruise, in fact, I have cruised 4 times with RCCL and never seen so many kids on a RCCL ship before ever. Most of the kids were great, but I was appalled by the parents attitude and the RCCL rep seemed just at frustrated, she was probably happy we were docking the next day and they would be off the ship.
Thanks.Vent over.

I would write a letter to RCCL complaining. I know it isn't their fault, but they could have at least offered to move you.

This is our biggest fear being on a cruise..especially since you really cant go anywhere!
I do agree with the other poster that you should write a letter to complain. Not that its the cruise lines fault but to bring it to their attention and maybe flag the family for future cruises!
I hope that you had a good time and this didnt ruin it.

We had an awesome time, it absolutely did not ruin it, there was no way it could've. The ship was incredible, the food was great, we had an excellent vacation. I love RCCL and wouldn't cruise on another line, I think I'll just check my calendar a little better in the spring to make sure it's not spring break.
I should've complained to RCCL earlier and more adamantly than I did. I don't think they could've moved me, I heard a few times the ship was sold out. I feel bad writing a letter to them complaining, because when I did finally complain they acted very swiftly sending security 2x and short of throwing the kids overboard , until they removed them from their room, there wasn't much RCCL could do.

I am glad you had such a great time!
I think it's so $hitty those parents did nothing to discipline their kids. Never mind they were old enough to know better.

Aww, man. I'm sorry you had to deal with that. It sounds like you didn't let it get the best of you, so that's great.
I also would complain. You've been on four cruises and are a loyal customer. You never know, they could offer you a nice upgrade or onboard credit for your next cruise...and as a PP said, perhaps flag that family so another person doesn't have to deal with their baloney.
They're probably torturing their parents right now. Sweet revenge.

I couldnt agree more. dh and i purposely do NOT travel anywhere where there's likely to be a large kid population (eg fly to orlando EVER, we stay away from cruises, avoid resorts that say 'family friendly' or anything with the word family). We don't deal well with incidents like the one you describe. I'm not sure what I wouldve done if I was you, I might have blown my top. Seriously.
Glad you had a good time anyway!!

I was really surprised at the amount of kids on the RCCL ship, I've never experienced it like that, and we've cruised in the spring before. I'm just going to avoid "spring break" time from now on, but we LOVE cruising so I won't avoid it. I love RCCL - there is an adult pool with it's own bar - no kids under 18 - I love it!

Yeah, it definitely depends on what time of year you go. We usually go in May right before all the schools get let out for the summer so there's not so many kids onboard. But that sucks. What is wrong with these kids? They sound like animals. I mean, I was a stupid, obnoxious teenager, too, and probably offended/annoyed people often but not REPEATEDLY after being reprimanded. I would've asked them to switch my room with the parents room!

You should post this exact message over at Cruisecritic.com, hopefully the parents of those nightmare kids will read it and be ashamed that they let their kids act that way!!

Absolutely write a letter to RCCL and how they should have moved you and never did.
That is totally unacceptable. Those parents were complete d*uchebag jerkoffs. Sure it's their vacation, but how about everyone else who paid for their vacations??
I truly hate people who act like that. I think I would have gone utterly ape$hit if I was you.

Re: Teenager/Parent Vent from my Cruise
I reccomend cruising in the early fall. Most parents don't take thier kids out of school when the school year first starts. (not the first week of school some skip that, but like 3-4 weeks into it.)
There will still be kids, but fewer. For the most party though, kids/teens have never caused a problem that I've experienced personally. Those parents just suck & should have left the kids with Grandma if they wanted a break!
Also, the RCCL staff should have told them that it didn't matter that they were on vacation--they are responsible for their minor children ( maybe they did.), but I know they are supposed to be super nice to everyone.
When I was on RCCL in October 09, on the 2nd day they instated a curfew for kids uner 16 or 18--I forget. I really wanted to know what happened that first night!

Re: Teenager/Parent Vent from my Cruise
Why didn't they move the rooms so that those two rooms had the adjoining door? It might have been a little better if you at least had a solid wall between you.
I would definitely write and complain.

I didn't complain at the beginning of the trip, we just talked to the teens and it seemed to stop, it was the last night of the cruise that was terrible and at that point I wasn't switching rooms even if it was an option.
