LI Half marathon people...

This weekend, I had to rest. I have been so tired lately. I had a stressful week which ate into my energy. I could not wake up for spin on Thursday. Yesterday I could only do a walk/run, and today - I was so tired, I slept late AND took a nap in the afternoon.

I have been going through a lot this past month with my stuff being stolen, some major issues going on at work, and finally, crapped out. I was doing so well with my workouts, but this past week, just ran out of juice....

So, I am going to see this past week and weekend as lost and move on.

I still have a chance to build more miles and get myself ready for the half at this point, right? Spring break is coming up, and although I am working a few days, I still have more time to put into my workouts.

When do I do my last run before the race? (May 1st?)

When can I do my last workout (spin) before the race?

I teach 3 Zumba classes a week, and I think I'll need to keep those up before and after the race, but I can deal with that....

It's ok to get off track, just try to get back into it. You would want to do your last long run weeks before the race and do a "shorter" long run the week before (5-8 miles depending upon your goals).

You didn't mention whether you've done a long run. Wherever you left off (I'm assuming last weekend), build from that. It's ok to skip a long run one weekend - I actually skipped mine this weekend so I could do a race today. So you could do one longer run this coming weekend (4/16-4/17). As far as your other workouts, just try not to overdo the legs the week of the race.

You will be fine, you just want to try to get in a couple of longer runs before the race.

Re: LI Half marathon people...

Thanks - my long run was last weekend - I did a 10K, but it actually worked out to 7 miles from before I passed the starting line.... I felt GREAT last weekend, which just wound up frustrating me this weekend. I am trying not to beat myself up over it - I know that is pointless, but I really wanted to keep it all going.

I am thinking of waking up early tomorrow morning before work to get a run in to make up for this weekend - but I'll see - Monday mornings are kind of crazy for me.

I think if you already did a long run, you'll be fine. If you have the time and motivation, even if you do 8 miles, that might make you feel better. If not, just jump back in next weekend. Racing a 10k is probably tougher than a 9-mile training run.

Good luck and enjoy the half.

Thanks!!!

I'm just so anal, and once I start on something I get so focused on needing to do things a certain way. It's hard to see I am not a robot, but as flesh and blood human that gets tired, hurt, etc.... Chat Icon

I guess I'm officially a runner - something I never thought of myself as - obsessed with goals, my miles, etc.... Chat Icon

Re: LI Half marathon people...

You defintely have more time!! I try not to workout at least 2 days before the half. The week before I keep the running very light and easy. The weekend before you can run a semi-long disance (I would say less than half the race- so no more than a 10k!)

So you still have a good two weeks to build up!!

I would give yourself a good week to taper for a half marathon. I would say no spinning - if your spinning is intense. Your runs should be easy and the total distance should be half of your last week's mileage.

Thursday should be the last run - and we are talking about 2 miles or so.

If you can get the long run in today - go for it, but if you can't FORGET it and move on. Increasing miles during the week is not going to make up for the endurance run. Put in a long run this weekend (Is 7 miles your longest so far? increase 1-2 miles) and try to get to HM pace for the last mile or two. Have a good speed workout and tempo workout during spring break. The weekend before the race a nice easy run ~6 miles or so.
