the questions begin

we conceived our twins 100% naturally. But I was being seen by an RE. They advised we couldn't get pregnant naturally and then bam I was pregnant. Then we come to find out its twins Chat Icon they did nothing but run some tests.

So many of my friends that knew I'm pregnant already have asked was it natural?
Of course it was, but why does it matter? if it wasn't, does that make me a bad person or something?

I had one friend tell me don't you think its odd you were being seen by a fertility specialist and then you find out its twins? You sure they didn't do anything?Chat Icon

I'm sure you girls have dealt with this, what do you say to people? I think its so rude to ask this!

Re: the questions begin

People say the rudest things without thinking. Strangers will come up to me and ask if it was natural...just a bit forward, you think? When I tell them it was I get "does it run in your family" or "how old are you"? My favorite is when someone says "now you're done...instant family!"

People can be so rudeChat Icon. I had IVF and am pregant with twins. I'm only 7w2d now and only a few close friends know (and they know about the IVF too). So I am bracing myself when we announce and the barrage of questions come.

A few people knew of our IF. We didn't tell many mainly because DH felt funny about people knowing something so personal. He equates it to asking someone who is pregnant, so what position did you try to get knocked up?Chat Icon Basically, he feels it's nobody's business. I'm a little more open and more like who cares, people are dumb.

I'm sure we'll get do twins run in your family? To which we'll say, well they do now.Chat Icon . Or are they "natural"? This is my favorite because it implies anyone who had IVF for their babies, their kids aren't natural. I'll say, well last time I checked yes, they are natural. 2 human babies and not aliens. But thanks for your concern. Then I'll just walk away and smile to myself. But, that's just meChat Icon.

I must remember this answer!

This is such an uncomfortable question for me to answer. People can be so rude and intrusive with pregnant women. It's insane!

Re: the questions begin

I think every single person we've told so far has asked if twins run in the family.

Ours are the result of Clomid/IUI and are in separate sacs.

As it turns out, my grandfather has siblings that were twins who didn't survive. And DH has second and third cousins that have twins. So that's what I tell most people ... even though I don't think that has anything to do with our Chat Icon Chat Icon

Everyone has asked, and I am so over it...where do people get off thinking this is OK? I don't go around asking for details on how others conceived?

Usually I just avoid the whole question, but I am really contemplating nect time, just looking dumbfounded and saying "that is really a rude and inappropriate question" and let THEM be uncomfortable for once.

Re: the questions begin

People are so rude! I haven't had to deal with that question a lot because most of the people in my life know that my spouse is a DW (and an Identical Twin.)

We told many but not a lot of people that we were going to an RE, but also telling people we were going to and RE was like other couples saying they were ttc.
Some friends and family know we are pg with twins, but we are coming out on FB this Thursday. I am so prepared for that question once strangers and people I don't know that well start asking. My answer will be, "Yes, twins run in my family, my wife is an identical." and then I will smile and walk away.

DH and I told his family yesterday that we are pg with twins. His Dad said to me "You know we have been waiting a long time for this and we were hoping it was going to happen soon. You didn't do any of that crazy doctor crap did you? Because you know all that is just a money making thing."

To which I just frowned and shook my head no...

However, my twins were conceived with clomid/IUI and YES I did all that crazy doctor crap you insensitive man!!! And so did your son...UGH...

So far we haven't told too many people so we haven't gotten the "Are they natural?" But DH's family has been asking if they run in my family because they don't run in theirs, to which I reply yes, they run on both sides, because they do.

Re: the questions begin

Yeah, people almost always ask "do twins run in your family?"...really just a roundabout way of asking if they were natural.
Twins actually do run in my family, so sometimes I just say ,"yes" and leave it at that. Other times, I say "they do run in my family, but I was on fertility meds". I don't feel any shame for that and sometimes it makes them feel like idiots because they don't know what to say! Chat Icon

Re: the questions begin

I am in the minority here, but it has never bothered me when people asked me if they were "natural." I am very open and it makes me very happy talking about how much we struggled and then how I became pregnant. Although, I can see how others would be offended.

Now if I had a friend like yours that didn't believe what you said, that would piss me off. Why would someone lie?

Re: the questions begin

I hate the "natural" question because its ridiculous. My twins are 2 years old now, and are completely natural. What are they fake? Or some kind of science experiment?
When people would ask if twins ran in my family, I would usually say "we're the first."

ETA: i also hated the "instant family" comment.
