Hot Yoga People
What do you love about it?
I really enjoy it over any other form of working out and I started to wonder why.
I really look forward to going and I love that it's my time for an hour and a half....no one talks, no distractions....just being able to listen to the instructor.
I also love how any stiffness or pain tends to go away. I leave feeling like a million bucks, and very relaxed.
What about you?

Re: Hot Yoga People
it challenges me. mind, body, and soul. a consistent practice over the past 6 months has taken my body and mind to new heights. watching myself in the mirror do amazing things just makes me want to come back for more. i once had a woman tell me after class that i inspired her to try a pose she was afraid of. that in itself made it all worth it.
it has also kept me off of antidepressants and antianxiety meds for quite some time now.
and the bangin' body is a huge plus!

Why do you feel like you are getting sick from it?
I used to think that when I did that in the winter months (I felt like I would get colds more often).

Re: Hot Yoga People
I love it because I am so NOT an exercise/gym person and this doesn't feel like either of those things.
It is also meaningful and like I found some kind of purpose if that makes any kind of sense.
I still have a LONG WAY to go in my practice, but what I love about it too, is the environment is so welcoming, non-competitive and non-judgemental.
I still have a ton of difficulty locking my knees, and have days where I need to sit out some of the poses but like one of the instructors says:
"Who cares? It's only yoga!".
I am planning to go tonight!
I am actually thinking about doing my first hot yoga challenge in June as well............which would be to complete at least 20 days of yoga.
I average at least 3x a week now, so it's really about getting over the "I'm tired I don't feel like going tonight" mindset.

I do practice Bikram. Those are the only classes they teach at the studio I go to, which is what I like.

I get physically sick. I almost passed out once. There is one particular move that I cant do. Number 22...it was explained to me that all the toxins are released in my body & I get dizzy if I attempt it.Image Attachment(s):

Re: Hot Yoga People
I was talking to my fiend who goes to the same studio as I do (I havent been for awhile) and she told me that there is a patten on birkram yoga now so unless you go to one of his studios, you wont do those particular poses anymore. How insane is that?????

yes, this is semi true. apparently bikram supposedly got greedy and is suing everyone who is doing this sequence without acknowledging the patten or some crap like that. the owner of where i go says that "bikram spies" come around to try to get the studios in trouble.
the studio i go to changed their flow, and while we do some of the poses, they aren't in that pattern. no one person can prohibit a studio from doing a specific pose. the sequence of poses is what was patented, not the poses themselves.

Re: Hot Yoga People
It's a normal reaction for everyone to sometimes feel really sick in camel pose.
I know I often do, and will sit out for this one.
Also, I think many studios have to call themselves "Hot Yoga" if not all of their instructors have actually gone through the teacher training with Bikram himself.
I am pretty sure this is the case where I go (Hot Yoga Massapequa).
I am planning to go to class tonight, but also went on Sunday and Tuesday and had to sit out for a lot of the poses. I think it's related to the rain and humidity. I noticed so many of the regulars, many who are front-rowers were also sitting out too so I didn't feel so bad.

According to the Bikram website, all teachers have to pass a 9 week class in LA to be certified to teach Bikram.
It is taught by him, I believe. It is about 10 grand to go thru the classes. Every 3 years, the teachers have to go for re-certification.

Re: Hot Yoga People
I've followed the blogs of a few people who have done the teacher training. It seems like it's very intense but it also looks like an awesome thing to do if this is what you want to do with your life.
I don't think I would ever be good enough to teach though.

OMG! Camel pose makes me sick too!! I love hot yoga and have done many yoga classes but for some reason, whenever I do camel pose, I get super dizzy and then feel like I need to pass out. I never have though... I just always have to go into childs pose until they move on. I thought it was just me!

Re: Hot Yoga People
yeah the certification is crazy insane, but you can still teach a hot class, so long as it doesn't copy the bikram sequence. when DH and I were in cali a couple of months ago we actually passed the bikram 'college' outside of san diego.

Re: Hot Yoga People
I went back this morning after not being at the studio since 5/25. I had an amazing class.
So happy to be back.
I also randomly met a nice couple, who I found out actually only live a few houses away from me who go to the studio regularly.
Small world!
