1st grade teachers...help!
Im looking to continue having DS (5yrs old) do his 15 min reading and homework every night (Mon-Thurs) over the summer...
I want to keep him busy, challenged, in routine and most importantly ready for 1st grade in the fall...
He was reading at a level F last "testing" period (although Im thinking by the end of the year comes that may change to a G) and we have most of the BOB series books, and I am looking for something a bit more challenging....
Please rec'd some lesson planning/curriculum books as well as level reader series; that will keep him at a first grade(or +) level...

He is a level F on the rigby scale (according to his teacher).
They use the wilson fundations program.

Many libraries have leveled books for summer reading. Maybe ask his teacher for a list of level F books? You could also read level G with him.
I teach 1st and my school always sends home a list of books. However, I'm on maternity leave so I can't help out that much.
Also, go onto the scholastic site and look for those level books. BTW, that's GREAT that he's at that level going into first grade. Usually kids regress a level or two over the summer so don't be upset if that happens. First grade teachers expect that!

Well, Im hoping to avoid that by working with him over the summer!
He really enjoys learning, and Im just trying to foster that as much as possible!

I teach reading in both k and 1 and I know that sometimes comprehension is overlooked in kindergarten and when the student gets to first grade and goes into a reading group they don't always understand what they can read. My recomendation would be to encourage him to discuss the book topic, title, illustrations etc. beforehand and illicit a prediction. Always discuss the story while reading: what do you think will happen next? how do you think the character is feeling? what was the problem in the story? how was it solved? etc. Level f is above grade level so you're son is doing great! No need to push him-just let him enjoy what he is reading. It's also important that he becomes fluent so don't push him to the next level if he is reading word-by-word and without expression. Let him practice "reading like we talk" with the books that are a comfortable level for him.
I keep books in the car for my son so it's more of a boredom breaker than an assignment. 10-15 minutes a day is all you need.

I really don't push him, but feel that its important for reading and " school work" (whether it be writing or math or whatever) to remain a part of our nightly routine...
Like I said before, he really enjoys it and I gives him something to do (better than watching TV, playing video games, or fighting with his brother) while I make dinner, straighten up etc...
Reading is OUR time... We cuddle, he reads to me, I read to him...the books we were working in had questions at the end of the story and I would be shocked at his comprehension because he does read word by word.... It doesn't sound like he is "talking" or understanding...but he is...
How do you suggest that I achieve that? (that reading like we are talking)
I would be happy if he was reading at a B level.... this is not because I expect him to advance (although it would be great if he did) but basically to encourage him to enjoy learning, reading, and school work!
Its very easy to let their brains turn to mush during the summer!
