We are adopting!
Months back I had started a post asking for suggestions on what kind of dog to get for my family. I wanted a small dog that didn't shed much. I was so unsure of what to get. Everyone gave me great advice. Tomorrow we are getting a one year old Shih Tzu that was rescued from a puppy mill in Pennsylvania!! Her name is Melinda. We are so excited. My 7 year old daughter is beside herself with excitement. I am a bit nervous about the change, but so excited to finally have a pet. Can't wait :) Thank you all your suggestions!! I will post pics soon!! I am sure i will also have some questions for the experts out there.

What a wonderful thing you're doing! Kudos to you. 
Do you know anything about her demeanor and personality? We've had some people here rescue dogs from mills and there was an adjustment period and training needed. And lots of patience. The horrible things they go through can affect them, and you can be the first people in her life to give her understanding and love.  I can't wait to hear more about her and see pics!

Melinda has arrived!! I have a ton of pics on my phone. Need to get them on my computer. She is such a love. She goes to everyone. We've gone for a few walks. We don't have a crate. The rescue didn't recommend it. We do have a gate that keeps her in the kitchen and dining room when we are out. She hasn't made a sound yet. She isn't house trained L( That is going to take some time. I really don't know where to start with that. She is soooo tiny. She is only 6 pounds. She was one years old in June. She had puppies before she was one years old. Poor baby. She is playing with toys, sleeping in her bed and giving a ton of kisses to all of us. It's like she has been with us forever. It is only the first day, but she is so darn cute!!

Glad to hear Melinda is home and doing well! For the house breaking, we used a crate though I do notice you were told it was a bad idea. We would feed our dog in the crate and then take her out for a walk. If she didn't go to the bathroom, back in the crate for another 10 minutes, then back out on another walk. It was a pain, but she learned very quickly. Congrats and good luck!

So glad to see your update! I could see why they didn't want you to do crate training, she probably spent the entirety of her first year in there. What a great thing, to be the ones introducing her to all the wonderful things in life.

Congratulations! Adopting is wonderful. We just celebrated the two year anniversary of when we adopted our dog and I can truly say it was the best thing we ever did!
Enjoy your new family member!!
