Arkansas Initiative 1: Ban on Gay couples adopting children..passed.
While this does apply to heterosexual couples who are "unmarried" -- it really is more specific to ensure that gay couples can not adopt children, as there is no way they would be able to because they are "unmarried"
Initiative: This measure would prohibit unmarried "sexual partner[s]" from adopting children or from serving as foster parents. The measure specifies that the prohibition applies to both opposite-sex as well as same-sex couples.
It really amazes me that there are so many unwanted children in this country...and people who are willing to adopt & love them will be turned away simply because of their life choice. Just sad.
ETA: Arizona AND Florida also passed a ban on gay marriage yesterday as well.

IMHO, this is NOT about gay marriage...it is about providing a child who has been tossed around the system a stable home.
I feel that a single parent home CAN be stable, but I can see the reasoning behind this proposition. It is the same reason why they will not let someone with "major health problems" adopt as well. God forbid the adoptive parent dies, medical expenses are too much for your family, the child does not have a stable home...yadda, yadda yadda. IMHO, even if you adopt and you are a single parent, or have a medical illness that child is LOVED and cared for, even if it is only a few years before the adoptive parent would die. Which is better for the child??? the State run foster care system??? These are the questions that IMHO should be asked. How can we make these children's lives better? I see both sides of it, that foster kids should have married parents b/c the reasoning is that that provides stability to the child. I feel that most people want to help these kids and we cannot agree on HOW to do it.

you also don't like in Arkansas
dina, I am a bit surprised. I thought this would anger you a little more...since it's this false issue of stability and where they *think* it's found that is stopping YOU from adopting.
i think placing ANY requirement on the home BESIDE being stable in ANY and EVERY way is ludicrious.
there are PLENTY of "traditional marriages" that I wouldn't allow to adopt a RODENT, let alone a child.
we need to step away from these cliches and antiquated ideas.

I'm sorry but I respectively disagree with you--because this ban was done to really target unmarried gay couples. You are right--a child does better in a stable home with 2 parents.....BUT this is stating that unmarried partners can not adopt at all. If there are 2 people in a home willing to adopt and love a child, but they CAN NOT LEGALLY MARRY -- then they are not permitted to adopt. That is specific to gay people.
Does it also include those who are heterosexual and single? Yes...it does. BUT does it target those who no matter what can NEVER be legally married because of their sexual preference, ABSOLUTELY!

Putting a child in a stable home is a no brainer, we all want that, I guess you assume that a single parent home or a same sex couple are the same as unstable??
What about making a law that children should only be put in a stable home, irregardless of the sexual afiliation of the couple, or the marital staus of the couple, if what we really have is the child's best interest at heart. no?
You may not know this but heretosexual married couples can provide just as unstable, and unhealthy an enviorment as anyon else.

Very well said. Many children in this country are in non traditional parent families and thrive. We took a step forward last night but also a step back.

Gay couples can be in enduring and committed relationships and provide a stable home with or without being married. As can heterosexual couples. The opposite applies as well. In this day and age marriage doesn't have a whole lot to do with stability.
Placing children into foster or adoptive homes needs to be taken on a case by case basis. Laws like these only serve to alienate people who would be fit parents as opposed to discouraging those who wouldn't.
I know a gay couple with a 5 year old son that they've had since he was a baby. That little boy was so wanted and is so loved. I haven't seen him since he was a baby, but my friend sent me a picture of the boy hugging and kissing his two dads the other day and it melted my heart. Believe me, they are a very happy, very stable family!

Ridiculous. I know many single women that are fabulous moms - as well as several gay couples that have been together for DECADES.
What does this have to do with being stable? Stability is determined by a social worker - on a case by case basis.
I guess Angelina & Brad will need to continue to adopt around the world.

Its disgusting...sad...unfair.
Anyone who thinks otherwise should watch Rosie O'Donnell's All Aboard documentary. It doesn't matter if you like her or not...but the thought of these kids not getting these wonderful parents because of a different belief system is outragous.
