The nook is touch screen & back lit although I believe the new model is not back lit. The kindle is lighter and not touch screen & the buttons are small to type on.
I'm more a fan of the kindle, I find the prices to great & the battery life amazing. I think it's a little less user friendly but its really easy to read. The print is just like a paper not a pc. You can go to best buy & they have all the models I think so u can compare.

I know my public library let's you borrow books via one and not the other (not sure which). One also comes in a black and white and a color version (not sure about the other).

Re: is there a difference between the kindle and nook?

I recently got the nook color and I did so for a variety of reasons?

(1) Ability to download library books for free (the kindle only supports proprietary file formats so you have to buy books) I have heard that the new kindles will provide the ability to download library books.

(2) Color touch screen. I know that there are pros and cons to this but I prefer to have a color screen, as I work on the computer all day long I am used to looking at the screens and do not have a problem with it.

(3) The nook color runs on an android platform so it is essentially an android tablet, and they have recently begun introducing more and more apps on the nook color. There aren't many free apps but for short money (as opposed to what you would pay for an actual tablet) you can turn the nook color into something that will work for you if you are in the market for a tablet (I also know some people who have "rooted" their nook colors and have made it an actual full fledged android tablet - I just haven't see the need for that)

I am sure this is more info than you needed but I just wanted to add my two cents.

I have the B&W nook and love it. I think it it comparable to the Kindle. My dad just got the color and loves it too. I would say just go look and hold them. I think they all have pros and cons

I have a B&W nook. I got it over the Kindle because of the free books from the library.

the nook is library friendly...there is talk that the kindle will be too, but we shall see.

Have you considered a tablet? You can get one for ~$250 and read books and do so much more with it.

Re: is there a difference between the kindle and nook?

I have a kindle but, I kind of wish I had a nook. For now, you can't borrow from the library on the kindle. It's supposed to be coming later this year. I don't like the backlighting on the Nook color because then you can't see it in the sun. But, the regular Nook is ink like the Kindle. Also Nook now has a Nook touch with the ink screen. It's pretty cool.

ETA: My kindle gets better battery life than my mom and aunts nooks. I have had it since mother's day and charged it 3 times.
