Nook vs. Kindle. What would you do?

Okay this year DH and I agreed to a $100 spending limit for christmas. I am taking this as $100 out of pocket and not things I can get say using credit card points. So I see the Kindle is $139 on Amazon, I can use my Amex points to pay part of it $70 which would leave me to pay $77 out of pocket leaving only $23 for other gifts, however if I use my Amex points to by a barnes and nobles gift card, I can use said points to get a $100 gift card and purchase the Nook for $149 paying only $49 out of pocket leaving $51 more for other gifts. The kindle though seems the more popular choice. What would you do? By the Kindle and no much left for other gifts or get the nook where I can buy a few smaller items to put under the tree.

The Nook allows you to download other types of books to the device than the kindle does. If you do a search on the storyboard area of this site you will see a couple of posts about it. Or FM CathyB she knows a lot about the nook

Re: Nook vs. Kindle. What would you do?

I have the Kindle, I got it before the Nook came out. If I had to do it over again, Id get the Nook.

1) with the nook you can "borrow" books from the library for free and are not limited to "pay to download" books from amazon
2) the nook is in color now
3) you can "lend" books on the Nook

So based on your situation, and what I think are the benefits of the Nook, I would go with that.

Yay! I love, love, love mine. Although I haven't been using it lately since I've been re-reading all the Harry Potters in anticipation for the movie next weekend and JKR hasn't approved their release in e-book format yet. Chat Icon

Love my Kindle.

Also, Amazon is rolling out a "lending" feature that is the same as the Nook.

One of my friends ordered both the Nook and the Kindle (he's a gadgetphile) and then gave the Nook away because he didn't like it as much.

Kindle has locked themselves into a corner by only supporting their own format. The lending on Nook isn't as big of a deal as the Library access via Adobe epub format.

I heard that you cannot read the color version of Nook in the sunlight. I like the Kindle better, but it only comes in black and white. I would love for it to be in color and still be able to see it in the sunlight. Any suggestions???

Re: Nook vs. Kindle. What would you do?

BTW, DW loves her Nook! She was thrilled when I gave it to her. We already got a bunch of books on there from several sources.
Got a few from http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page , some of the free ones from B&N. Haven't gotten one from the library yet, but that will happen very soon.

Even with all the security features I have on my Wi-Fi, I still had no problem hooking up to it. Now, we both know what she's getting for Christmas... a cover/case for her Nook.... Chat Icon

You can read Nook Color in the sun, but since it's a back lit device it's not as easy as the original Nook or Kindle. They can't do a color e-ink (at least not for an affordable price) which is what the Kindle and original Nook are.

Don't know. She only got it this weekend, so she still has plenty of time to shop.... Chat Icon I'm not going to influence her at all. I did all the technical shopping for the electronic item. She gets to pick out 100% the fashion/aesthetic item..... Chat Icon

Not to feed your addiction or need, but.....

Javoedge slashed prices... plus they a 15% off coupon. So I have 2 new cases on the way for 30 bucks. Chat Icon

They're not the newest designs, but I still like them.

Really? What's the coupon code? My brother's getting a Nook for Christmas, maybe I'll pick up a cover for him.

If you buy it on amazon - code is NOOKNACK

I got the Tweed flip and a poppy flip; Tweed would probably work for a guy. The tweed was 20 something and the Poppy was 14 I think - then the percentage off of them.

Happy shopping.

ETA: I have the cork, and it would be good for a guy too. It's not fabric that looks like cork, it's actually cork.
