Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
I asked the DH to get this for me for our 13 year wedding anniversary on the 26th. Romantic, I know.
I know I want one of these...but I don't know which one.
I heard the Nook can "borrow" books from the library. Is this true and how does that work?
I don't want to have to BUY every book I read because I only read a book once. I'd love to be able to "borrow" library books on the device.
Also, the Nook is backlit so I can read in the dark, correct?
Thanks so much for your feedback!

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
Well, I have a kindle...and LOVE it.... but i've never really played around or no anyone with a nook, so I can't really compare the too...
I know with a nook you can trade books with a friend....however, I believe if you trade them with one person, you cannot trade that book with someone else. So if you have a friend that has a nook and likes similar books, then you guys can kinda trade back and forth with eachother..

I have the Nook Color and I love it. I borrow from the library all the time. It is very easy. You just need to get a library card (if you didnt already) and then go online put in your account info and reserve books. Once they are available you'll get an email that it is ready for you to check out. Then you just download it. You need a program called Adobe Ereader or something like that - the library site should tell you.
Mine is backlit and I like it because I can read in bed while DH is sleeping. I am going away on vacation on Sunday to the beach...I am a little concerned about a glare in the sun...so we'll see..

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
Nook can borrow from the library, kindle is only amazon books. I did hear that kindle might be changing over though.
The Sony ereader is also a good ereader.

The Nook is being discontinued. I would go with the Kindle.

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
We have a Nook and a Nook Color. Can borrow books from the library on both. Actually you can borrow books from the library on any e-reader except for the Kindle (they use a proprietary file type) so you can also look into other ones that support epub or pdf files like the Kobo or Sony ereader.
The traditional Nook uses e-ink and is definitely easier to read outside. It's not backlit so if you want to read in bed you would need a light, just like a regular book.
The Nook Color has a full color backlit touchscreen, so it's fun to play with, but like an iPad or laptop is slightly harder to read outdoors. You can play with the contrast and it's manageable, but I've not tried it at the beach yet where the glare would be a lot more than in my backyard.

Only the 3G traditional Nook is being discontinued. The traditional wifi and the Nook Color are both still in production.

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
Thanks so much everyone!!
I am forwarding this thread to my husband so he can start shopping.
It sounds like the Nook Color is the one I'd like better since I can borrow books from the library.
Thank you so much!!

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
I went with the Nook Color over the kindle.
I played with both first and felt that the Nook Color fit my needs better. It's more a tablet than a straight e-reader. But it also felt more natural in my hands
I don't really read outside so the glare wouldn't be a factor for me. I DO read in bed though and I love that I can read after DH goes to sleep since it's backlit.
I have a queue full of books from NY Pub LIbrary and Suffolk's Library system.
Nook Color can be rooted and you can put the kindle android app on it too.

Oh...that sounds awesome! Is the Adobe Ereader something I have to upload into my computer? Where do I find that program? Does it come with the Nook?

Its Adobe Digital Editions. You have to download it to your computer from the Adobe website. You then download the books to your computer and transfer them to you Nook. I have the regular Nook Wi-Fi and love it. It is not backlit, it has the e-ink screen, so you need an external source of light. I chose the Nook over the Kindle because of being able to borrow the books from the library. I have no desire to pay for every book I want to read.

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
I have a nook, and I have played extensively with my SIL's Kindle. I MUCH prefer the nook. Here's why:
1- Being able to borrow library books is MAJOR for me, although the library's selections are fairly limited.
2- No backlighting on the nook. If I was reading with a backlight all the time it would kill my eyes. On the nook it looks like you are reading from a page.
3- I love the little touchscreen at the bottom of the nook. I dont like how the bottom of the Kindle is set up.
DEFINITELY go with the NOOK!!!!

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
I have a Nook and I love it. I commute to the city and it's so nice not having to carry around heavy hardcover books. It's also great for vacation when you want to bring more than one book.
I wanted to mention something about trading books with other Nook users. A book has to have the "Lend Me" logo attached to it in order for it to be elibible to lend to another Nook user. Of all the books I've purchased over the last year only about 3 have been qualified to lend. Just wanted to give you the head's up because before I got my Nook I was under the impression that all books were elibible to lend.

Thanks, everyone!! It sounds like the Nook is exactly what I want!!
I love that you can get books from the library! I can't see myself "buying" books that often because I only really read a book once.
Thanks so much!

spinoff question - for those that have an e-reader, does reading hurt your eyes after a while?

These are pretty much the reasons I got a Nook for DW. The e-ink is much easier on the eyes than the LCD screens.

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
I guess I'm in the minority in that I prefer the Kindle.
I didn't consider the Nook color since I didn't want the backlit screen (strain on the eyes). I tested out the regular Nook and the Kindle and to me the Kindle was a superior product - I found it lighter, I hate the touch screen on the Nook, and I think the Kindle e-ink is a touch crisper.
True you can only borrow library books on the Nook, but some googling will show you some ways around that.

No, I have the 3g, wifi nook and it's never hurt my eyes, even after an hour or more of reading.

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
I have a kindle and LOVE it! I prefer the keyboard to the Nook's touch screen, and I feel like the Kindle's setup is more intuitive than the Nook (my MIL has the Nook). The Kindle acts more as a hard drive than anything, so it is very easy to find your games, books, etc because they are all in one place.

Re: Kindle vs. Nook...which do you prefer?
I have the kindle (anniversary present!) and I love it. I get eye strain from anything backlit after a while. I never have eye strain with the kindle. It really seems like I am reading a regular book, I still find myself trying to turn the page!

Ditto - I obsessed for a while and did a crazy amount of research, but in the end I just liked the Kindle much more.
