Ruptured ear drum question

About 3 weeks ago I believe I ruptured my eardrum swimming. I had slight pain with it for about a week and a half but mostly it was just annoying because everything sounded muffled. It hasn't bothered me for a little over a week but yesterday and today I have had some pain in the side of my head just above that ear and I have also had pain in my jaw on the same side. The pain isn't anything unbearable but it's definitely noticeable. I am wondering if this could be related to my ear problem even though I haven't had any ear pain in a while. I am worried I may have had an infection that could have spread. Has anyone ever had an issue with this? I will call my doctor just to be safe but I am just curious. TIA

Re: Ruptured ear drum question

Oh yes, I did have a perforated ear drum years ago. Basically, I let an ear infection go too long before getting it treated, and by the time it was treated I was in horrible pain and some of my eardrum was damaged. I did have the eardrum repaired, but it has never been the same.

I would call an ENT and go in ASAP, though it sounds more as if you might have swimmer's ear or some water trapped in there that is causing an infection and pain. I don't think it's easy to rupture your eardrum swimming unless perhaps you do scuba or something like that.

Thanks for the info, I will be going to the doctor later today just to be safe. I am pretty sure it was ruptured since I was a swimmer for years and never had anything like this. I went down to the bottom of a pool to quickly and immediately felt a painful pop. I knew right away I did something to it. Either way, Ill just let the dr look at it. I don't want an infection to go too long, I have heard horror stories.
