feeling awful
I am in the worst work slump and have done nothing but cry the last few days. I dont know what to do or how to handle it. Our ceo has a reputation for being a bit of a bully - he is out of the country so my office doesn't usually have to deal with it - but I seem to have made it onto the sh+t list because I have been yelled at in email three times in the last two days out of nowhere and without any justification. I did respond to one of his emails saying that I am surprised by his feedback given that i have done everything that was asked of me (and cited examples) but appreciate his thoughts and will keep them in mind for the future. Then I get yelled at again this morning. One of the senior mgt team proceeds to throw me under the bus and my mgr is so busy that I am sure she can't address it. I don't know how to get out of this rut. Has anyone been through this? Can you share some advice please?

Re: feeling awful
I don't have any major advice, however, I do know that a lot of people I have worked with, whether it be through my company or outside of it, use email inappropriately in the way they "speak" to people.
I would be willing to put money on it, that people get bold behind what they are willing to say through email vs. how they are if they had to confront you face to face.
I'd tell you to try not to take it personally, but I know that often is a lot easier said then done.
I am hoping that maybe these were just a couple of really bad days for you, and that things will look up moving forward and you can put this behind you.
FWIW, when I've had similar happen, it's ALWAYS blown over.

I haven't been through this because while I've worked for people that were bullies, I didn't have issues with them.
I am trying to figure out how the people I know would have responded to an email that you sent.
I understand your reasons for wanting to send a "i'm surprised by your feedback", citing examples of what you've done & that you appreciate their feedback & thoughts.
Truthfully, I think they would go apesh1t over it & you would have a target on your back until they found a new target.
I don't know the nature of the email he/she sent you & what he was yelling at you about but in the future it may be safer to address the issue at hand only, explaining what happened without offering excuses & go with the "I will ensure it doesn't happen again."
For the next few weeks, I'd go above & beyond, keeping management informed until it blows over.
From what I've seen often bullies need an "enemy" that they're railling against so it will pass & someone else will have a turn (hopefully the person who threw you under the bus).
Also while you didn't ask, look closely at the email & take an honest assessment of your work. I'm only saying it because being in HR, I've seen manager give employees specific examples of their failings, what is expected of them & how they can improve. I've given them myself & yet 30 days when nothing has changed in their work & we're terminating them, it's a complete shock. I wouldn't want you in the same boat. If you truly feel that you are repeatedly being singled out, I'd start sending out resumes. Not because they're terminating you but because it sounds like an unhealthy environment for you.
