Adopting breed specific
A friend of DH's & his young daughter have fallen in our love with our Havanese and want one. They have checked local shelters, petfinder, craigslist, etc but cannot find out. The Hav rescue group is located in the midwest and only does local adoptions. Any suggestion for how to conduct a breed specfic adoption? TIA!

Re: Adopting breed specific
Petfinder is showing an adult male Havanese dog at the SPCA of Connecticut.

Re: Adopting breed specific
Darn. Hmmm - they could also try filling out a rescue adoption application from the Havanese Club of America . Although, it may take some time until a dog is located for them.
ETA: The local NY Havanese Club may be a good place to contact:

Did that too, thanks You have good ideas and I appreciate it. To me, it is good news is that Havs are hard to find in shelters.

Re: Adopting breed specific
Looks like you guys have done a lot already! Yes, it's definitely nice to hear that there aren't many Havanese in need of a home. And it's also nice to hear that your DH's friend is trying so hard to rescue one.

Re: Adopting breed specific
Try the ASPCA.org's breed referral contact. She/he may be able to put you in touch with someone who has or knows of any Havanese dogs in need of a good home....they may have more contacts than what's published on the net....

Ditto on this idea
Also, you could try to find some breed-specific web groups. They are usually a great resource for rescue and different orgs that cater to the breed.
ETA: Although I am sure you know this already, adopting is not always as easy as going & picking out your dog. You may want to remind them that the rewards are greater when adopting, but also the process is usually harder. I am extremely active in the local rescue community, and it took me a long while to find my rescue pups, especially Bruno.

I recently just rescued a dog from a rescue, and one thing that I would also like to add is that sometimes their personalities are different once you get them alone. With our recent rescue she was so timid and shy in the rescue and we took her for a walk and she opened up tremendously. Also sometimes with rescues the full medical history is not known about the dog, for instance the dog we just adopted we were told had a cold (kennel cough) but it winds up that she has Pneumonia and it has cost us $2500 to have her treated, and she still faces more medical bills and also I have to nebulizer her 4 times a day for the next month. And we have not even had her a week yet.

Oh my, that's awful! I hope she's feeling better soon!
I'm not sure how many shelters do this, but I do know that the Little Shelter does cover costs for any pre-existing conditions. (Our dog had a NASTY case of kennel cough when we got him and it took him 3 weeks and three different medications to get over it. We didn't have to pay for anything since he had the cold when we got him.)
