So upset..don't know what to do
I graduated 2 years ago & I was lucky enough to find a permanent substitute position at a wonderful elementary school. In May I finished my second year there.
All summer I have been searching for a full-time job and haven't been able to find anything. I was so concentrated on finding something full-time that the thought of getting on additional subbing lists didn't cross my mind. I am on the one for my town since I only work Oct-May and figured I could pick up extra money in Sept. and June on their list. My P has been saying all summer he's going to recommend me for my perm. sub. job again for this school year.
The secretary called me today to say she's typing the memo recommending me again. I asked her if my going into a 3rd year would be a problem, and she said they were putting in the memo I was there for 10-11 year and not mentioning my first year. They don't know if there is a rule on perm. subs. going back beyond a 2nd year, so if there is a rule I wouldn't know until mid-September when the perm. sub. recommendations go to the Board. If it's not OK, I would like to know now so I can try and get on additional sub lists for this school year in case per diem is my only option. I just got off the phone with her and it was frustrating, she didn't get why I was upset and I was getting frustrated with her for that. I want to know now if it's OK for me to go back, but they don't want to ask & bring it to the HR's attention in case there is such a rule since they are putting in their memo that I was there for 10-11 and not mentioning 09-10.
I'm so upset at the thought of not being allowed to go back, and the thought of having to per diem sub after two great years in a wonderful school. I don't know if I should have them call to ask or just go with their way of thinking of just taking a chance.

I do not think it would be a problem. I know people who have subbed for way longer than 2 years with no problems.

why don't you just go on one or two more sub lists anyway? that way if you don't get it then you're covered and if you do then you can just call them and tell them you accepted a full time position so you won't be able to sub?

My principal has never had anyone longer than 2 years because they've always found something after the 2 years. With this economy, though, he was to keep me in the school until something comes up. It's not a tenured position, so I guess I can do it for a while.

I've done that in the past, but this year was so consumed with teaching summer school and interviewing for full-time positions that it slipped my mind. I called a few districts yesterday and a lot aren't hiring per diems, which was my concern. I've had some luck with private schools, though.

I dont see anything wrong with being there more than 2 years as a permanent sub. Good luck!

Re: So upset..don't know what to do
There is nothing wrong with 2 years perm. subbing! I was a part time teacher for 4 years. While I was teaching part time I also subbed in the school. Last year, my position was cut and I went to subbing full time and this year I'm going to be a TA in the library cuz they cut the librarian at the middle school and now the one from the 4/5 building is moving up to the middle school!
So...basically I graduated college almost 6 years ago and have yet to land a full time job! It is a tough economy right now and the education job market is flooded.
Do you have Special Ed? There are major changes happening for Special Ed. at the secondary level and I'm hoping that when they are state mandated in 2012-2013 school year, my luck will change
Good luck. Try to stay positive. If you ever want to talk, feel free to FM.

I'm not Special Ed certified..Childhood & Literacy.
I was contacted today about a new TA posting at a very prestigious private school. If that works out, I may take it. I don't see my perm. sub. job leading anywhere with how things are going in my district, and I don't want to get too comfortable there if it won't lead to anything.

Could you share what these changes are? I haven't heard anything yet and I'm curious! I'm Spec. Ed certified 7-12 (with the 5-6 ext) so I'm curious

I don't know all the changes happening, I know for me, a language teacher, it is suppose to be state mandated as of Feb. 2012 that at the secondary level ALL subjects contain a Special Ed. teacher. Which for me means that language needs to be included!! Right now, many districts don't hold language classes in the same value as "core" classes and see adding the Special Ed. component as a luxury.
I also spoke with my Asst. Supt. before the end of last school year and he said this year they are focusing more on testing and scores, etc. Also, RTI is becoming state mandated for those schools that have not implemented it yet.
I tried to Google the changes to see when each step was taking place, but I've come up empty handed. If you find out more info. let me know. I'm in the same boat as you...Spanish certified 7-12 and just obtained my Special Ed. as well as 5/6 extension
