Please recommend your SHELTER/RESCUE ORG!

As some of you may remember, we said goodbye to our furbaby Chewie a few weeks ago after a battle with kidney failure and the discovery of a brain tumor. We have always known we would get another dog when Chewie passed, and we have decided to slowly start looking. We will only adopt/rescue, and want a dog that is 1-4 years old or so. If you have adopted/rescued and loved the shelter or organization you went with, please recommend! We loved loved loved Chewie to pieces, but the rescue org we got him from we weren't so impressed with. The foster mom made all kinds of claims about Chew that turned out to be untrue, it was as if she didn't know him AT ALL, and we later found out he had preexisting medical conditions that they did not diagnose or disclose (we don't know which). Needless to say we will not be using them again. So any and all suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

We got Rocky from NSAL as a puppy. I had a great experience but he did come with the typical shelter issues (kennel cough, worms) but he is a great dog and after he got rid of those things early on has been completely healthy.

I am sorry about Chewie. Chat Icon

How about looking at Petfinder? There are so many animals on there, usually by rescues, that need homes.

Oh we're totally using petfinder! I just wanted a bit more insight on any specific rescues that people have worked with. Thanks! Chat Icon

I cannot say enough wonderful things about Little Shelter!!! We got both our dogs there. They constantly check in on our dogs. They sent a trainer to us many times to help our special needs puppy. They paid for the surgery of my new dog because she was sick the day we took her home. I love them so. If you have any questions about them please FM me.

Re: Please recommend your SHELTER/RESCUE ORG!

We also adopted from North Shore Animal League, but I will say be careful. The staff there is NOT knowledgeable about dogs. They adopted a german shepherd/chow mix to my mom when we were kids (3 young children!) saying that she'd be the best family dog. My brother and sister EACH nearly lost an eye from that dog. She was a good dog to my mom and dad but she was terrible with kids. Anybody who knows dogs would know that about a Chow and would not recommend that dog for a family. They also refused to take her back after she bit my brother the first time. After that, we put her into extensive obedience training in the hopes it would help but after she bit my sister, we just couldn't keep her. We enrolled her into this rehabilitation/rescue program that never sends dogs to a shelter or anything like that. They keep the dogs until they find them a forever home.

Ever since then, we've done exhaustive research on dog breeds and what would work best for families which is how my mom wound up with her collies! Now, on the flip side, I went back to NSAL as an adult and adopted Irwin. The woman, again, wasn't knowledgeable, but this time I was. I knew Irwin for what he was (a collie mix) and adopted him and I have to say, we were blessed with an amazing dog. Chat Icon So ust be careful when you go, know what you're looking for and what you want to avoid, and take what the staff says with a grain of salt.

ETA: We also adopted from the ASPCA in Brooklyn (my mom's collie, Rascal). They gave us a very hard time about adopting him since my mom was working with a rescue group at the time and didn't have to pay the adoption fee. They held him for 3 extra weeks in case anybody was interested in adopting him at full price, but they weren't (Rascal is a HUGE dog- he's like a bear!) and so my mom adopted him.

Re: Please recommend your SHELTER/RESCUE ORG!

I found my dog on Petfinder. She was with Heart and Soul rescue organization out here on the Island, having been rescued from a kill shelter in Brooklyn.

Best thing we ever did. Chat Icon

Re: Please recommend your SHELTER/RESCUE ORG!

<--- my little Terrier Mix came from Waggy Tail Rescue . We ran into the foster Mom in the city & that's how we got her. They disclosed her food aggression and things like that. Good experience. They deal with mostly smaller breeds.

NSAL got my first dog there in 1995 when I still lived at home. She was very sick and I had to bring her back a few times for follow ups...ended up just sticking with our own vet. Wasn't too impressed with them.

2 yrs ago my parents went to adopt again from NSAL and were completely screwed over by them. They found a pup, played with her, did all the paperwork had references called and waited the whole time and were THEN told they were too old to adopt a puppy & they recommended an older dog...even with my brother there who stated the dog would be taken care of God forbid something happened to my parents...who were 70 & 75 and very active. I called up when they told me this and the guy who rejected them was an a$$ to me and wouldn't even give me his last name. I also heard of another couple being told they were too old. So NSAL is off my list now. My parents ended up finding a breeder and have a well trained 2 yr old Border Collie..so much for the incapable old farts Chat Icon

That's funny - Chewie was a terrier mix and was also from Waggy Tail! I don't want to be too negative about them because we loved our little guy more than anything, but I wasn't super impressed. But thank you everyone for your recommendations! We have some feelers out already, and hopefully will soon find our next furbaby!

Re: Please recommend your SHELTER/RESCUE ORG!

League for Animal Protection( LAP) In northport. I only have nice things to say about them. I found them thru petfinders when I fell in love with my cat on there site, and it was linked to League for Animal protection. (LAP) . I got a wonderful cat from there. She is a true mush and we love her to pieces- I got my other cat at Little Shelter and they were great too,The cat I got from there is a true mush. But when I was looking for the newest furbaby I had called and asked about adopting an adult cat and the volunteer was NOT nice and she did not call us back for almost 2 weeks- because they were "busy" adopting out kittens and puppies during the holidays last year. This annoyed me to NO end , here I was wanting to adopt an adult animal and this is what is said to me overthe phone?! I used to donate money and food and blankets etc to them- not anymore- I was LIVID.This was just my own experience there. I am sure not all volunteers would do this.
