Religion class and halloween
My sons first grade religion class is on Mondays. Halloween this year is on Monday and class is scheduled. My sons regular school dismisses at 3:30 and religion starts at 4:30. It let's out at 5:30 and the next day is a school day! Would you send your kid? I really wish they would just cancel!

I would absolutely send my child to religion class. I'm not a holy roller but I think not sending them bc it's Halloween sends the message that Halloween is more important. As a catechist, I would definitely not cancel for the same reason. And even if it is more important to them as small kids, to give them religious ed, they should see it as more important or as important as other things. Plus, it's 1 hour. They can go, come home & have dinner & then ToT for an hour or two.

I would cancel in a heartbeat! Halloween is once a year, religion is once a week. I honestly doubt many kids will even be there.
I canceled my son's class (not religion) for Halloween because I don't want him to miss trick or treating. Your son will have a half an hour to trick or treat (I wouldn't go after 5:30--starts to get dark and I'd want to be home around then) and that's just not enough. I'm sure he's excited to wear his costume and wants to wear it for hours!

I'd just go after religion. 5:30 is a perfectly fine time to go trick or treating!

My DD has it on Halloween, but the church cancelled it. If they hadn't, I would let her skip it.

I am not in this position yet, but I was actually thinking about this the other night. Growing up I went to Hebrew School 2 x a week and sometimes on Sundays too. While I appreciate the background it gave me, at the time (and still a little bit) I really resented going. Not just on Halloween, but there were lots of things I was unable to participate in due to Hebrew school (i went from 2nd grade until 7th). I truly believe I missed out on a lot of activities due to this and at this point in my life I am not very religious.
While I want ds to get a good background, I would not hesitate taking him out of a religion class to t.o.t. In the future, when I look for a temple to sign up to, I will be looking for a temple that does not have religion 3 x a week!

I would just go after. Many people don't get home until after 5 on a weekday anyway

Thanks everyone! I forgot to add that I have a 4 year old and 15 month old who will be waiting all day o o trick or treating. It seems unfair to me to have them wait until 6 pm when it's pitch black!
If this was a Saturday or Sunday I would have no problem sending him because then we would have the whole day to enjoy but nice school is taking up much of the day I think I will have to pass on religion for the sake of all of my young kids! I just wish the church would take this into consideration and cancel it.

I completely agree...
We have responsibilities whether we are big or small.. we should stick with them even when there is something "more fun" we want to do.

I don't think the church is going to take a "devilish holiday" into consideration when setting the religion schedule.

Yes Trish, the teacher's have a diocesan conference on Halloween.
Given that you have the 2 others I would let him miss; b/c honestly I think not many will show up anyway. I do see the logic to honoring the commitment though.

My dd has the same schedule as your ds (wonder if we're at the same school & church?) and her teacher already told us that she's not going to be there on Halloween. She said that she'd arrange for a sub but I doubt there will be many (if any) kids there. I'd planned on going until she said that, now I'm not sure what we're going to do.

You know what kills me.... this is the same school that is no longer a catholic school due to regionalizing, where I attended pre- k through 8th. Every single year that I attended catholic school there we had classroom Halloween parties where we dressed in costume. So why oh why are they not canceling class? It's just frustrating! This holiday is a big deal to the kids and it really has its origins to Catholicism. Its not about devil worshipping. Its about kids having a good time! I'm not going to send him but I will review his lesson with him at home perhaps the day after Halloween. Thanks everyone for all ur insight!
