WWYD?

I've been at my new job for one month.
I hate it. I'm miserable. It has been very overwhelming and ALOT to learn. I'm not giving up, but I am looking for a new job.

I had an interview today, and they were ready to hire me on the spot.

Is it wrong to not give 2 weeks notice at my current job?
I'm thinking of going in tomorrow and telling them Friday is my last day.

Thoughts?

COMPARISONS

Current job - DS has to go to before-care and after-care. Job is 8:30am - 5:30pm M-F. It's 15.1 miles/ 30 min from home (w/o traffic or weather issues- on Sunrise Hwy). I feel very RUSHED to get there on-time as well it is easy to get caught up in work and not get out on-time (getting stuck on a call) - which stresses me out b/c I HAVE to pick up DS BY 6pm. The aftercare person leaves @ 6pm. It's very corporate and dressy.

Prospective job - DS would not need before-care, and only occasional after-care. Job is 9am-5pm M-F. It's 3.5 miles/ 9 min from home (no major roadways except <0.5 miles on 347), very casual work attire (was told I could wear jeans to interview). Potential for extra $ in commission.

Prospective job is $101.20 LESS per week (take home).

Benefits are negligible as I am covered by my husband.

Re: WWYD?

I would ask the prospective job if they are willing to wait 2 weeks so you can give appropriate notice. If they say no, then you can just tell your current job you're leaving Friday. If they say sure, you can tell your current job that you are giving your two weeks notice, but that you will understand if they want you to leave sooner.

idk, that's what I would do. I would also definitely be leaving for the new job.

Re: WWYD?

I have been in your position and I know I will get flamed for this but I don't think u owe the new job two weeks. Sometimes it just doesnt work out and Id rather take this wonderful new opportunity NOW then wait the 2 weeks. If a company had to fire u they wouldnt feel bad, I dont think u owe them anything.

I agree with pp. And re money, I would look ath this from all angles. Your take home is less but you are cutting the childcare expense.

In this situation where you were only there 1 month, I agree with the above with the above.
It's not like you've been there years and will need it as a reference. It was only a month. You won't even need to put it on your resume.

Good Luck!

I just think its wrong to leave people in the lurch.

You never know who you will run into down the road, I would ask the new job to wait.

I agree - they may even tell you to leave right then.

I agree.

Also, regarding the money--you have to ask yourself if you are comfortable taking in less money per week. Keep in mind you will be saving money in gas and child-care expenses so it may equal out.

If it were me and I knew the money wasn't that big of an issue I would take the new job.

Good Luck!

Re: WWYD?

I would tell them asap (once you get a solid offer). I wouldnt give two weeks. You have to do whats best for you. The new job sounds great. Do they know that you will not be needing benifits? The may be willing to give you more money if they know they wont have to pay for your coverage.

Agreed. Depending on the industry, some circles are very small and you don't want to burn a bridge.

Hopefully they will say Wednesday-Friday is enough notice since you have only been there 1 month.

I would not give 2 weeks. I might possibly give ONE week but that is a big if. It is only a month, it's not going on your resume, you're never going to ask for a reference...I would make Friday your last day.

Re: WWYD?

I understand wanting to leave a $ucky situation (trust me I do), but honestly, having worked for many dysfunctional places, it would really make me think about what I would potentially be getting myself into with ANOTHER employer who needed me that quickly that they could not wait out 2 weeks for me to give appropriate notice.

I also echo those who mentioned the small circles thing.

Especially in THIS economy.

A lot of people know people and rumors and gossip run rampant.

Re: WWYD?

Give the two weeks. With any luck, they let you go the day you give notice.

My husband has the same reservations. When I called the woman to accept and I could start Monday, she stammered and asked me to call her tomorrow. DH thought that was odd and asked me if they gave me an offer or was it just an implication of an offer.

I think I MAY just tough it out where I am (I have another prospect I'm waiting to hear back on)

I appreciate oll the responses. I started this post after the interview, but after I called back to accept.

Re: WWYD?

That is very strange.

Did you get an offer in writing?

Hells nos would I put in notice to a job if I didn't have something written and extended that way.

Don't let your feelings about your current job cloud your decision in accepting something somewhere else without totally thinking it out.

Also, IMO, it often can take a good 6 months or so to begin to feel comfortable at a new job.

I do get when the bad signs are there early on, but this is something wise some people have always told me about "work environments" in general and it not necessarily being greener on the other side.
