Can any 1st grade teachers offer insight

on abstract math?? DD is struggling a little and I want to help her. She is fine with traditional addition and subtraction. It is a bit confusing. I "think" NYS will not formally adopt it until 2013 but her school is integrating it now.

Thank you

Re: Can any 1st grade teachers offer insight

Example there are 2 squares 5 cirlcles in one square and 3 shaded circles in the other square, above both squares is the number 8. The kids are to write subtraction equations based the drawing. She gets that 8-3 = 5 and
8-5 =3, and that you cant subtract 8 from 3 or 5, BUT she gets hung up on the equation when it is reversed such as 5 = 8-3

It is Envision Math by Pearson, Common Core

I think that is just a skill she is going to have to learn. The equal sign can go on either side. It maybe taught in that curriculum, but it isnt anything new.

A big part of the common core standards in first grade has to do with addition/subtraction & problem-solving with algebra. Being able to write the equation in reverse is developing the framework for more complex algebraic concepts.

Along with that, equations like 5 + ? =7, where you find the missing addend also develop that algebraic understanding.

I can relate my first grader is alo doing envision math and is frustrated at times. But as an upper grade teacher I m so happy he is getting introduced to these kinds of problems.....it will be so helpful come those state exams in 3rd and 4 th grade.
