Dropping Kids Off.. my vent for the day

Our school as a little semi-circle in front called the 'Kiss and Go' area. The idea is that you pull in, drop off the kids with a quick kiss and then you GO.

Two issues with this and both are because efffing people are completely inconsiderate of ANYONE else.

The first is that older kid parents pull only about 2 car lengths into the circle before dropping off their kids because the entrance to the school is at the beginning of the semi circle. Honestly? Even if you dropped them off at the OTHER end it isn't a very far walk.. so what is the big deal? By only pulling in 2 car lengths you wind up with a HUGE line of cars waiting to get into the circle. It makes me BANANAS.

The other is the fact that sooo many people let their kid off and then sit and WAIT for them to walk alll the way into the building and for the doors to close behind them. Again.. looong lines of traffic. Today there were 3 SUV's sitting there WAITING at the beginning of the semi circle (where the kindergarten entrance is). A Navigator and 2 slightly smaller monsters. Even though I had kissed and let my kids walk (ALL THE WAY INTO THE BUILDING ALONE) - I still was held hostage behind these three as one of them got out of the car to walk her daughter in and the others sat there waiting for the kid to get inside.

Don't get me wrong.. I get parent anxiety. But there are alternatives to effing with everyone else. There is parking in front of the school, in the parking lot and all down the street for people who feel the need to wait with their child. When the boys were smaller I would park in the parking areas, get out and walk the kids in myself. I did not hold up every other parent who may have something to do with my ish.

And the school has sent NUMEROUS letters and reminders home as to the appropriate protocol.. but there are these folks who just think it doesn't apply to them.

I have nowhere to really be today - but they don't know that. The real issue for me is that people don't give a cr*p about anyone except themselves. And it makes me sad to realize that these people have kids and those kids will probably pick up that same selfish attitude one day.

Hrmmph.

I'm just cranky.

If I could slow the car down & have my kids jump, drop & roll so I didn't miss a train, I'd be in the first categoryChat Icon

Don't let them get you down. There are plenty of people that are considerate. It's the other ones that stick out like a sore thumb.

THIS is a fabulous idea. I think they should do an inflatable pull up chute for parents on the go. Chat Icon

I'm surprised they don't have someone out there sort of speeding things along. I know they do that where I work.

There should be a guard like at the airport.

My biggest pet peeve (and I am a teacher) is that we have an area for drop off that the parents don't use for early morning band. They insist on stopping right in the entry driveway to the school to allow their children off at the front door of the building. All of us trying to get into work on time are stuck behind parents who are unloading their children and then waiting for those children to enter the school....1 by 1. Sometimes I am late for a meeting because those parents are blocking the parking lot......grrrr!Chat Icon

My DC's school is the same way. Parents are constantly warned about it and keep doing it all the time.

I don't do drop off or pick up but I know it drives my husband insane b/c he has to go around the block numerous times.

At back to school night, the teachers said a parent actually drove across the lawn (it is horse shoe shaped with grass in the middle) and they were appalledChat Icon

Re: Dropping Kids Off.. my vent for the day

We have a guy and a teacher out there for drop off and pick up and they make sure the traffic is moving and lord forbid anyone stops for too long....

I wont do the tuck and roll as DD is in kindergarten so I park and walk with her and DS.

I sometimes park on car line and put DD in the car and wait for maybe 15 mins for the cars on front of me to move - if their kids get out later than mine and it drives my 5 year old NUTS!!! "Mom cant you just drive around them"...etc etc so unless its a really bad day we always part and walk - not worth the anxiety.

Re: Dropping Kids Off.. my vent for the day

funny I experienced this today just at pick up time. Our school has a double lane circle...outter for stopped or cars in line and inner for MOVING traffice...well today parent PARKED-CAR OFF-GOT OUT and went into school to get their child...then another idiot follow suit. So now the parents that obeyed the rules and got their kid are stuck!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon until the 2 jacka$$s got their kids
Like you said so inconsiderate!!! They can see parents waiting on line and they just DONT care, they double park and leave their vehicles and JUST DONT THINK that maybe someone needs to leave or has to wait for them...Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My son's principal is outside everymorning opening the door of the car for the kids and greeting them. She always has another person out there with her too....but it keeps things moving fast!

Re: Dropping Kids Off.. my vent for the day

Morning drop off is the worst at DS school. Maybe it's because I am so not a morning person but the amount of dumb drivers at DS school amazes me.

We have an area where you can just pull up to the curb and drop off the kids. Friday morning I am just about to pull away from the curb when this woman just stops her huge hummer in the middle of the road, can't go around her either way, and lets her kids out. Then stays there till they go inside the building AND then applies her lipstick. I wanted to get out the car and beat her with my purse.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I honk and she has the nerve to roll her eyes at me before she pulled off. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Dropping Kids Off.. my vent for the day

We have valet moms who volunteer to help kids get out of the cars...which is a HUGE help and I tipped nicely last year at Christmas time...I will eventually do that when my hip is in better shape.

BUT, I had a kindergartener last year and I cop to slowly leaving the semi-circle to make sure she ran to the door and went in safely...sorry, I held someone like you up, but she is all I got and at the time, walking her myself wasn't an option.

Re: Dropping Kids Off.. my vent for the day

I don't know if anyone lives in North Wantagh or in Levittown near MacArthur and Salk but I subbed for the district for a few years and when I would have to work at either of those schools is was a nightmare because the parents would stop in front of MacArthur backing up the traffic all the way to Wantagh Ave so that no one could turn on to Jerusalem Ave. You would get the green arrow to turn and wouldn't be able to because of the parents letting their kids out. It was addressed at a PTA meeting and someone brought up that the buses are less than half full that come in each morning due to the parents driving them in instead and that the problem could be solved if those kids who were eligible took the bus. One of the parents replied that instead the teachers should carpool so that the parents could use the teacher parking lot to drop off their kids.
