developing peanut allergies as an adult?
After eating PB&J a couple of times in the past few months, I've noticed my throat is itchy. No big deal, but it's disturbing to think that I could potentially be allergic to peanuts! Also, we have 2 more packs of Reeses left over from Halloween- I can't give those up! I ate two today and it's itchy again.
Has this hapened to anyone?

Re: developing peanut allergies as an adult?
Yes! When i was 23 I randomly developed an allergy to pistachios and some types of peanut products. I notice the natural peanut butter doesn't bother me so much. I've since also developed allergies to certain raw fruits and veggies (ie: apples, cherries, carrots). If I freeze or cook them I can eat them but i can't eat the raw product. I went to an allergist and they think I'm allergic to pollen in the foods and that when it's cooked it's killed off. I don't know for sure why it happened but it's so annoying!

Mine wasn't peanut butter... I became allergic to gluten, dairy, eggs, meat and a host of medications. My first allergy attack was when I was 23. My doctor said that your body chemistry changes and thats what can cause it.

Re: developing peanut allergies as an adult?
you can definitely develop allergies at any age. Get yourself into an allergist, Take some benadryl if you're itching and stop eating the danged Reeses even though I know they're good If your throat is itching now you could develop anaphylactic shock with a future reaction. Don't play around with that!

I don't have experience with this but reading through the comments.. wow! I didn't know developing that type of allergy was possible! That's scary, but good to know.

Re: developing peanut allergies as an adult?
Not peanuts, but I developed a birch allergy as an adult (I'm allergic to raw apples, cherries, plums, almonds, and a few others). It sucks because I used to really like some of the foods

They say your body chemistry changes every seven years, or so, and allergies can come and go with the changes.

Re: developing peanut allergies as an adult?
I would make an appt with an allergist asap. A peanut allergy is not something to fool with. You can definitely develop allergies as you get older and get rid of old ones too. I think they change about every 7 or so years - and some type stay with you once you develop them for life. My DH became allergic to crab when he was in his late 20's. My father to strawberries in his 30s. But some are more serious than others. Peanuts is one of them. Itchy mouth is a symptom. You don't want to wait until you get a bad reaction to deal with it. It is easy enough to go to an allergist and let them test you so you know for sure and can have an epi pen if you need it.

Re: developing peanut allergies as an adult?
ITA with this. I was at a wedding once where someone's throat swelled up and wasn't able to breathe and was taken to the ER via ambulance. It was later determined that she was allergic to shellfish. She was in her 60's I think and ate shell fish her whole life! Better safe than sorry! Def. get it checked out so you are prepared just in case

Wow, so weird. I also developed some nut allergies and fruit/veggie allergies. Weird though because supposedly I am allergic to corn but can eat popcorn, corn chips, etc. Weird! Wonder if I can eat them cooked?!

I know my DD recently developed a bunch of food allergies. Her allergist was saying that for some people they can eat the cooked fruit/veggies but not the raw ones b.c the proteins change when they are cooked. So that is possible.

Interesting, thanks!! Maybe I'll try apple pie lol (allergic to raw apples) and keep benadryl and my epi pen close at hand lol! I miss apples especially in the fall!

I wouldn't do it if you have a bad allergy I think it only works for those who have mild reactions. I would speak with your allergist 1st. I know that some people who are allergic to say milk or eggs can have it in limited quantities once it is baked into something but not in their raw form like yogurt or drinking milk or eating plain eggs - but say a cookie might be okay. But if you need an epi pen probably not the best idea.

Re: developing peanut allergies as an adult?
Definitely speak to your allergist before trying the apple pie. While I can eat it, I don't want to assume everyone can. I was given an epi pen as well and luckily have never needed it. While it gets very very uncomfortable, my reactions have never been life threatening thank goodness.
On a side note I had my first ever allergic reaction to nutella the other night. I used to eat it alllll of the time. My life is over...

I also wanted to say that sometimes those tests aren't always accurate. It said I was deathly allergic to green beans but was fine with celery. Sure enough I eat green beans all the time with no issue but can't have celery. My doctor told me the best way to know for sure was to try things and see if I have a reaction. I'm so glad he told me that AFTER he gave me over 60 injections of allergens over the course of several visits.

scary!
Mine also isnt peanuts but cats!!! I had a cat for 18 years growing up, then he died, i moved out, and whenever i visited my friend's house who had a cat i would get watery eyes, sneezing, red face, throat closing!
I had the blood work done and sure enough my antibodies to cats were through the roof, dogs distant second.
I'm dismayed to this day. I love cats and would desperately love to adopt like 10
Hope the peanut allergy isnt true for you!
