Former marathoners re: prep for DH
DH is running his first NYC marathon on Sunday...actually his first marathon ever!( ) He's nervous and excited...I'm mostly nervous. lol. I'd like to do something special for him or get him something special/useful before race day. I plan on going to cheer him on with our DD but is there anything else you could suggest? Maybe schedule a massage for next week or something?
Please keep in mind we have a 1.5 year old little girl and I'm 11 weeks preggo when you make suggestions of things I can do.
TIA!

Re: Former marathoners re: prep for DH
hey my dh has run 7 times and each time it's rough.
there is a good chance he may have a very upset stomach (so much acid in his system so for a meal after think of something easy on the stomach.
there is a YMCA near the finish on CPW. the guys my husband runs with go there for a post race chicken soup before heading on the subway home.
when you meet up with him, have the following ready :chap stick, tylenol, ben gay, a banana, Power bar/nuggets/gel, a bottle of water and gatorade and bandaids. make SURE he puts bandaids on his nipples.
it's great too if you can position other people around the city with similar supplies.
my husband's birthday is always on or around marathon Sunday (it was yesterday) so we would normally have a post marathon dinner with friends and family to congratulate him. but it's done either home or at his brothers home a few blocks away.
we make pasta, soup, veggies, bread...and have a cake.
I also bought him some bath salts and make him an awesome bath for this last marathon (3 years ago). eucalyptous I think.
he is liable to be VERY sore the next day and going down stairs will be the most difficult. Motrin or Advil and a good breakfast would be great.
and a massage after a week will probably be good too. encourage him to go for a short run after a few days. his body will thank you for it.
good luck!!!!!! and congrats!

Re: Former marathoners re: prep for DH
After my first nyc marathon I came home to a signs and ballons and a massage cert. for the next day. I thought it was really sweet.
Also, one of my friends did this for me- she made a care package and it had all fun things that I would need:
band aids pasta for the night before sport beans chapstick hair rubber bands (not that your husband would need this) inspirational sayings Mix CD with inspirational songs
you can also add: throw away gloves and hat (since he will be waiting for a few hours before the race starts and it is cold!) magazine or newspaper to read while he is waiting sports drink those hand warmer things

If you do a massage do it for the next day. Good luck to your DH!

Re: Former marathoners re: prep for DH
A massage definitely! And afterwards letting him complain and lament and not do anything strenuous with the house and kids.
DH tries to see me as often as possible...NYCm is hard to do, but if you could do btw mile 7-13 and after mile 20 it's good for spirits. If you can only do 1, after 20 is more helpful.
Arm Warmers are great to have, if he doesn't already. I prefer old tube socks, but men tend to chafe more with them bc of tank styles. So make sure he has body glide and any fuel that he needs.
