Re: jACK RUSSEL TERRIER

I have a broken coated JRT named Murphy. He has a wirey coat and he sheds alot! Not sure about a smooth coated one but I know they do shed somewhat.

They are not known to be "great" with children as beagles and labs are but our Murphy is amazing with our 4 year old who puts the dog through torture. He has NEVER even snapped or snarled at DS.

They are incredibly smart so training is very easy. Murphy was 80% housebroken in a week when he was 8 weeks old.

FM me if you would like more info.

They do shed a LOT. My DH's cousin in Ireland has one and we stayed at their house so we got to know Molly. Like the pp mentioned, they are very smart. Too smart! lol!

I've never owned a JRT myself, but I've heard from others that they are generally not very good with children and saw it for myself when I visited Molly in Ireland. She was very mouthy and was very specific about the way she liked to be handled and if she didn't want to be touched anymore, she'd let you know with a nip.

Granted, I don't know how the dog was raised or anything, but whenever there were kids around this dog, I was always on guard. I don't think the dog would have done any serious damage, though she did break my skin once, but that's not a theory that I wanted to test either.

Our first landlord had two. First, they NEVER shut upChat Icon Second, they LOVED to dig. Third, one of them was the sweetest little thing ever...the other had a nipping problem. (They were from the same litter and so were raised together from 8 weeks old)

Re: jACK RUSSEL TERRIER

THey shed, they bark alot, they cannot be left alone outside as they will dig (high energy), they can be nippy and fresh b/c they are very hyper (I got bit by one a few years ago).

Main point....They need a LOT LOT LOT of exercise and activity, otherwise you will have a destructive dog or a nippy dog (biting as a result of high energy pent up) on your hands.

They are only for certain people IMO, who are very dedicated to their dog and home ALOT. If you have young children, I would not even consider this breed until your children are older. If you are out alot, skip this breed. They are too high energy to be left alone all day. They won't just sleep, if you KWIM.

My neighbor had one a few years ago. He had to play ball with him EVERY SINGLE MORNING< make him run back and forth, over and over, to release his energy.
