Any vitamin gurus? Question about vitamin d
How much is too much?
I am taking a supplement with 5k of vitamin d in it (my dr's rec) .. but I'm also on an iron supplement that contains vitamin d in it too (1k) .. and my prenatal has about 500.. so all in all, that's A LOT of vitamin d, right? considering it's a fat soluble vitamin so you don't just flush out what you don't need..

Re: Any vitamin gurus? Question about vitamin d
hmm..I read 2000 mg is the max daily dosage.
You could call up your local pharmacist to find out, I'm sure.

Increased vit. D can help promote & boost fertility. Maybe that's why they have you on such a high dose? I believe there are ramifications to having increased Vit D, also. Although I am not sure.
I find all the vitamin stuff so confusing! I'm supposed to start taking Vit D because my doc said my levels were too low (but this is sooo common I hear and they check for it now routinely) so I've been doing some research on it.

Re: Any vitamin gurus? Question about vitamin d
Yes me too!! I am actually on it because I'm deficient in it.. so though it may help with fertility, that's not the direct reason I was put on it. My level was 28. I thought that sounded low.. but then I heard my dh's number. I believe it was either a 7 or 8 Needless to say, we are both taking supplements!
ETA: My dr said 90% of Americans are deficient in vitamin d!!

Re: Any vitamin gurus? Question about vitamin d
You get vitamin d from sunlight. If you're not outside with bare skin often enough (like Sept - June, lol) you'll be deficient.
When I was pg, my doc prescribed me 4000 units a day. A recent finding is that women on 4000 a day (10 times the recommended daily allowance!) have healthier pregnancies. Couldn't hurt to start early. As for whether you're taking too much... I assume it's like most other vitamins and whatever you don't use you'll just pee out.

Re: Any vitamin gurus? Question about vitamin d
Thank you so much!! This was very helpful!!
Also Dava- vitamin d is actually fat soluble (vitamins D,E,K, and A are all fat soluble actually) which means you don't pee it out. That's just some random knowledge I remember from my nutrition class in college
Thank you ladies!!!!

I found out over the summer I was deficient in Vitamin D too, and when reading up about it found yes it can impact fertility too (great).
My Doctor said anywhere between 30-100 is normal and I was 18.4. Well after taking 2,000 units a day for 4 months my level is now 33, so in the normal range, but on the lower end.
So Dr says to just keep taking my supplements. What I found out about Vit D is that it isn't actually a vitamin, but a hormone. The foods it naturally comes in I don't eat, certain fish and mushrooms, shrimp and a whole egg. It seems this is a pretty common problem.
