DH's grandma passed away
How would you take this wording in the contract for bereavement time?
In the event of a death of a relation, a teacher is allowed a maximum of three (3) days absence, and these days are in addition to sick leave and are not deducted from accumulated days. Relations are defined as employee's mother-in-law, father-in-law, grandparents and grandchild.
Do you think this counts for DH's grandma? I have to enter it into the system as a bereavement and don't really think they would question it, but I'm not so sure. I can't really afford to use my personal days since I have to save them for maternity leave.

Re: DH's grandma passed away
If anyone asks, why don't you just say "my grandma passed away" I don't think people would ask if it was yours or dh. If they did, I would just say yours....

Yeah, I just feel like a liar then. I'm close to most of the people I work with so they would know. It's just not very specific in what a "relation" is. Technically, it's a relation I would think. I mean, if I'm not there and at work instead I would think it would look horrible on my part.

I would suggest contacting a union rep. They would have the best answer for you.

My school is very laxed with that! My aunt passed away last year and I got the day off...and my BFF's grandmother passed away and I got that day too! I just brought in a note from the funeral home!

His grandma absolutely counts as your own grandma. I am 100% certain. You get the 3 full days.
I'm sorry for your loss.

When my DH's grandma passed they gave me 3 days, they knew it was HIS grandma. I only needed to take two though.

Re: DH's grandma passed away
Thanks for the replies. Just an update. The secretary was nasty when I told her and immediately said I had to use my personal days. I went right to the union rep who agreed the contract wasn't specific. She went to speak to the principal with me and he said they would look into it. Came back that I had to use my personal days. I was so upset with them and through it all not one of them said I'm sorry for your loss. Guess I shouldn't have been so honest.

Absolutely not, I would continue the fight! You do get time, did you call your main union office? Sorry for your loss.
