Am I being Mean?

I have only given my kids Organic milk. DD is in kindergarten and they supply milk at snack time. I did not sign her up for it and I do give her chocolate organic milk to take to school occasionally. She does not drink regular white milk.

She came home today with a note from the teacher asking if she could have the milk given out at school and is pleading with me to let her have it.

1) I do not want her drinking non organic milk on a daily basis.

2) I do not want her drinking chocolate milk on a daily basis.

So I feel like the only answer is NO but she is so upset and I wonder if I am being mean?

I wouldn't say it's mean, but I could see why she'd want it if the other kids are having it.

Is your DD upset that she can't have the milk like the other kids? If so, maybe send in an organic milk box (white milk) most days, with the chocolate ones still as treats.

You're not being mean at all. Part of being a good parent is making a sound parenting decision based upon your moral/values/beliefs/research/experience not peer pressure. It's also a great life lesson for any child to learn.

i'm a quasi "organic mom" but pick my battles. this is not one i would "fight". i'd let my daughter drink the non-organic milk and draw the line elsewhere...

I am the same.

Sometimes it's more important for your daughter to feel like "one of the gang" than it is to stick to your guns. 1 small milk a day won't do any harm. And truthfully, after a while she may choose to go back to your usual routine.

ETA I am in a similar situation. I don't allow my kids to drink soda EVER, but we are at a point where my older one feels left out and embarassed at parties when he has to say "water please" when he's offered soda. I now have a "parties only" rule for soda. The first few parties he drank Sprite, but the novelty wore off and now he mostly drinks water and explains that he doesn't like soda all that much. He was much more comfortable knowing he could have it if he wanted it and making the choice himself.

Re: Am I being Mean?

Horizon makes individual milk servings- I don't know all of the flavors, but what about sending her in with one of those (I'm just assuming they are organic)?

Re: Am I being Mean?

Thanks everyone, I dont think i was clear in my original post - DD will not drink REG, White milk so she would be getting chocolate milk every day.

I have sent in those horizon milks occasionally and she was happy with that but I dont want her drinking them every day.

I explained my reasoning to her later this evening and she was fine with it (typical 5 year old - one minute its the end of the world and the next its no big deal!!) so I am going to send some chocolate milk in her cup tomorrow seen as its a freshly debated topic and then she can pick one day a week to get chocolate milk or two if there is something special going on.

Thanks for all your replies - such a great sounding boardChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

So doesn't drink white milk ever? Or by regular you mean non-organic? So confused, but doesn't take much Chat Icon If she doesn't drink white milk ever, I would probably just cave and let her have the chocolate everyday for the calcium. Unless you supplement with other things for that.

I'm confused too..

Honestly, if she only drinks chocolate milk with you and wants regular milk at school, then I'd let her have the regular milk.

Yes, i'd probably tell her that she can have the school milk, but its white milk. That might a- change her mind so she doesn't want to have it or b- encourage her to drink white milk. Either way its a win for you, plus i'm sure the school milk is probably the hormone free kind even though its not organic.

eta: sorry, i saw your resolutiion after i replied.

but she wants to drink it AT school?

I would just let her if that's the case and she wants it so bad.. at least she is getting that milk in (which is better than chocolate milk)

This is what my son drinks. I send it to school every day.
They have regular, chocolate, and strawberry.

In your case (OP), I'd let her just have what the other kids are having, if that's what she wants, but, at home be more "strict" with something else.
