Such Willpower!

Last night after we finished baking our first batch of Christmas Cookies, Emily was taking her nebulizer which is dessert time, and I asked her if she wanted a Christmas Cookie.

She looked at me as if I had 14 eyeballs and said, "MOM, they are for SANTA!!!!!!"

If only I could have some of that willpower! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Such Willpower!

She needs to come teach DH a lesson! I make a ton of cookies every year. Some to take with us to parties, some in little containers to give to people, and some to have when we host our families. But DH takes it upon himself to eat at least 1/2 of every batch I make! Then gets mad at me if I say he can't have any, I am saving them! I freeze almost every batch after making, which helps keep his hands off them. I got lazy the other night, left the batch of Snickedoodles on the counter in a tupperware container, only to wake the next morning to find 1/2 gone!

The difference is that Emily believes in Santa, and that eating Santa's cookies will have grave consequences.

I guarantee that if your DH was charged $10,000 on his credit card for every cookie he ate, he'd have a lot more "willpower" too.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Grave consequences? What kind of Santa do you think we describe to our kids? If you eat Santa's cookies (or cannoli in my house, it's not like he doesn't leave presents.Chat Icon

For most parents (as described in numerous threads here, and other sites, books, articles, etc), if you're not good, Santa will give you coal (or something along those lines). To me, that's pretty grave.

It's drilled into their heads from parents, books, TV shows, songs, etc that there is a "Naughty" list. How can a child NOT think that eating Santa's cookies would get them on that list?

I don't think any kid actually believes they are going on the naughty list and getting coal in their stocking. Just like I've never met anyone who was actually angry with their parents for lying about Santa.

In addition to fun stuff, my kids do get coal in their stocking, just like I did when I was a kid, and my mom did when she was a kid. We all know it's going to be in the toe in a little baggie, and we laugh about it and then move on. No big deal.

Trish, you must be nicer to your DH than I am to mine. I told him the other night that if he touches anything I baked for Christmas he'd best figure out how to remake it to replace it or find a good lawyer. Chat Icon
