Best/Quickest way to housebreak a puppy?

My sister just got a puppy and she's trying to housebreak it, but it's not going well. It's about 8 weeks old. Thanks!

Does she have a crate? I found once I started crating Shamrock it started helping. Dogs. Won't go where they sleep. I also took him out right after he napped, finished playing actually I was taking him out about every hour when he wasn't crated. When he does go outside I would praise him and give him a treat. You also have to watch if he starts smelling around grab the leash and bring him out. I also kept the leash on him for a while so I can just pick it up and bring him out. It also will help when you want to correct him for doing something wrong. Just grab the leash take him away from what he is doing and say no.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions! I think she does everything except keeping the leash on. She takes him out constantly and is starting to associate when you say potty outside and he runs to the back door at least. But, he still will have accidents in the house? How long does it usually take before they "get it"? Thanks again!

He is only 8 weeks? It sounds like he is "getting it" already. He is running to the door when you say potty? It sounds like he is doing great for his age. He is still going to have accidents. Shamrock is 9 months and still has an occasional accident

Where is he having accidents? Just around the house? In the crate?

If he's going in the crate, you may need to put a divider up to make the crate smaller. Dogs generally don't go to the bathroom where they sleep, but if it's too big, they'll go in a corner and sleep on the other side.

If he's going outside of the crate, I'd crate him more often. I know that sounds mean, but it's not as a punishment but rather as training. I always fed the dogs and would wait 5- 10 minutes and take them out. If they didn't go, back in the crate for another 5- 10 minutes and then out again until they finally go. That should hopefully reduce accidents. But I definitely agree, at 8 weeks he's a BABY. Have patience! Chat Icon
