Getting dogs teeth cleaned
Can you recommend your vet? And how much did they charge you?
Murrays breath is terrible. I tried some over the counter products and they only worked temporarily. I need to look into having his teeth cleaned at the vet. My vet quoted me something like $300!!! Was just looking into getting some more prices

D....I can find out what i pay but I think its around that. They do bloodwork, use anesthesia, etc. It's a small surgical procedure so its probably a fair price. I have paid it a few times, just dont recall.

I agree with this.
I've actually paid more because our chihuahua almost always has to have at least 1 tooth pulled.

My vet is around the same price. Like pp said it requires sedation so it is $$. I brush my dog's teeth and it has made a huge difference in reducing the amount of plaque he has...it is not his favorite time of the week but he deals with it.

We started brushing Charlie's teeth about 6 months ago. Granted we don't do it as often as we should ... the vet said a few times a week and we do it more like 1x/month  It is difficult for sure.
The vet said that you have to work them up to it. He recommended a series of steps that you do several times a week for a few weeks each until you move to the next step.
Step 1 -- get your dog used to you rubbing their gums and teeth with your fingers for a few minutes just so they are used to you being in there.
Step 2 get dog toothpaste (it comes in several flavors and you have to figure out what your dog prefers like chicken or beef) and rub it on your dogs teeth and gums iwth your fingers...
Step 3 Get a dog finger-toothbrush ... it's like a little toothbrush that fits over your finger...use the toothpaste on that...
Step 4 once the dog is used to you brushing their teeth with the finger toothbrush the vet recommended a soft bristled children's size toothbrush and brushing with dog toothpaste a few times a week, every week.
He said in the long run it will save us a LOT of money so that the dog's teeth are cleaner and require less work when they get older.

I bought a kit from petco that had a finger toothbrush and a regular toothbrush and the dog toothpaste. I have tried both toothbrush styles and I have found the regular one works best for my dog.
I set up the toothbrush first then I have my dog lay down I sit next to him resting his head on my leg. Then lift up his lip and begin to gently brush his teeth. I start in the back and move toward the front. I talk him through it and the most trouble he gives me is he tries to turn his head away. I think my dog is more cooperative than most...he will let me do all of his grooming with little resistance including nail clipping.
The step by step method the pp explained is probably a better way to do it if your do is resistant. You could have some one help you by gently holding the dog's head still while you go through the steps.
