If you a host a casual party, what do you make?
DS's birthday is coming up. Having a small party of about 20 people with toddlers / kids. I'm trying to save money by cooking. What are some easy dishes that everyone likes?

Things that might work for BOTH children and adults that have usually been hits at parties I have had and have been to in the past include:
chicken cutlets mac and cheese penne pasta with marinara sauce meatballs (can be with or separate from the penne) tossed garden salad

Baked Ziti and Chicken Cutlets are both easy crowd pleasers.

My easy go-to is lasagna. I also make a very simple linguini with clam sauce that is a huge hit.

Re: If you a host a casual party, what do you make?
I'm a fan of cook outs if the weather is nice. I throw on a few burgers and some dogs and make a couple of cold salads. If you want to do appetizers you can have a crudite and some chips and dip. Cake for dessert.
I also agree that pasta - baked ziti, lasagna, stuffed shells or whatever - is an easy, filling meal that generally pleases most people (unless they are avoiding carbs). Served with some bread and a big salad you have a meal.
I have also done a taco/burrito bar in the past. A few trays of seasoned meat - one ground beef and one ground turkey or shredded chicken and then tins with toppings - shredded cheese, lettuce, chopped tomatoes, sour cream, onion, refried beans, green chilies, avocado, pico de gallo, cilantro, guacamole, etc.. People can dig in and make their own taco or burrito - it's interactive and delicious. You can do chips and salsa and nacho cheese as an app.
