Parent Vent

I was volunteering today at my DD's school and there were a bunch of other parents volunteering as well. During the morning the school budget topic came up and one of the parents started going off on a tanget saying that we (as a district) spend to much money on special needs. She went on and on how "these" kids, especially the autistic ones should not be allowed in the same school as "typical" children. Saying that they have tendancies to bite and hit and do not learn anyway. Then to make it worse she said that they should all be sent to a community school so they do not have to be intergrated with the "typical" kids. I almost lost my mind. She did not know my DD was in Special Ed but the other mothers did and they tried to change the subject but the friggin woman kept on talking and talking.

I should have blasted her but i was so angry I thought I was going to kick the shit out of her that I just said fyi my dd is autisic and in special ed and is the most gentle, caring and smart girl you would ever meet.

I just can't beleive in this day and age that people still think like that.

I don't have kids.myself yet but I am a special education teacher. It gets my blood boiling when people, who are either uninformed or uneducated, in this topic make judgements. I'm sorry you had to listen to that. Ughhh now I'm mad!!!

A sad reminder of just one of the many challenges DS will have to face. People are so ignorant. I applaud you for maintaining your composure. DH would likely have been arrested

Ignorance at it's best ! Her words were intentially mordacious, and she obviously has a difficult time learning herself ! Perhaps she needs her own little community !

I should have said something but i was too mad to even form anything that would sound halfway intelligent. She made herself look like an ass and everyone knew it. I'm sure their little gossip circle is already buzzing about what a complete moron she is especially spewing all that crap infront of me.

She is IGNORANT!!!!!! Not all children with Autism bite, so everything she said is based on maybe one incident she came in contact with.
That is like saying if an african american shot and killed someone......then all african americans kill..

She's a dumbass. Taking all the benefits of integrating kids out of the mix, what does she think it would cost the district to send all of those kids out of district for school? She thinks they spend too much now? How does she think that would help the situation?

I know exactly what you mean about not saying anything. Sometimes I am furious when I hear things, but I know at that moment, I am just not in the frame of mind to enlighten anyone.

Don't ever read the comment sections of online articles about autism. They will make your blood boil. It's like we've come a long way in understanding it, but only in certain circles.
