Re: autism

I have 6 boys, 2 on the spectrum. There are no right words to say but over time you'll see things will fall into place. ABA is wonderful and it's a way to really get through to kids on the spectrum. My suggestion is do lots of research, try what you can and see what works best for your child. As hard as it is it's wonderful that they gave him a dx early so he can get therapy. GL and the girls here are wonderful so don't hesitate to ask questionsChat Icon

Re: autism

It is devasting to hear, but know that your life will just be different, not bad. You will see amazing progress with the right teachers soon enough. You will love your DS more and more each day, and he will surprise you all the time.

Re: autism

My son was diagnosed at 18 months. It does get better when you see the amazing things he CAN do. I t does get easier. Im not going to lie, my son is 5 years old now, and I still get upset every now and then, but the key is acceptance. Feel free to ask any questions. We are all here for youChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: autism

DS was diagnosed at 18 months. I cried so much! He will be 5 next month.

It does get easier. It will never go back to the life you knew under you get the diagnostic.

It's like a grieving period. Your old life and now your new life because NOTHING will ever be the same.

At the same time, you will learn to live with it and adapt because you just don't have any other option.

Accept that you will cry for a long time. We are here for you. We know how much pain it is. We also understand the challenges ahead of you, the roadblocks that you will encounter, and that other people just won't understand and will give you unwelcome advice or just completely irrelevant.

Just ask anything here. A few of us have been in it for a few years now.

Re: autism

My oldest son was diagnosed at 14 months - he is now 7 and doing beautifully. It is HARD WORK but there is hope! Allow yourself some time to process and cry. It's not fair and it hurts.
But then start to educate yourself - we are very fortunate to live in a state that has tremendous resources. Google Autism Speaks first 100 days packet. Start there. Read 10 things every child with autism wishes you knew (it's in that first 100 days packet) - then learn about Sensory Processing Disorder. Ask your OT for a sensory diet. Finally - reach out to friends or groups like this board for support. I cant promise that it will be easy, but i can promise that it will be worth it. You're an autism mom now - you've earned your cape, go get em super-mom.
