Vegetarians come in

Since i've become one, I find when going out with friends or even eating in, when the obligatory questioning starts about why I decided not to eat meat anymore, I find myself tip toeing around people so as to not make them feel uncomfortable as they are almost always about to eat some meat.

I find this very awkward. How do you approach this?

I'd rather not say "well I don't subscribe to the brutal killing of other species for any reason, animal torture, hormones, antibiotics, steroids, or having rotting flesh in my stomach"(all of which is how i really feel) as they are about to dive into their brisket. Chat Icon

If people ask, I just say I don't like meat. Which is true...that is the original reason I became a vegetarian when I was little. As I got older and learned more, I added a lot more reasons to my list, but I try to keep it simple and just say I don't like it.

I tell the truth.

I say I don't like it. Why I don't like it... well that's another story... but I keep it simple and truthful. I don't like it. I don't want to eat it. It was a personal decision I made when I was about 13. And after 15 years of not eating meat, I feel like I would get sick even if I tried. (but have no interest in doing so).

I don't ever express the real reasons (found the raw meat/blood gross, animal cruelty- bad conditions, the hormones and other stuff they pump the animals with, disgusted by undercooked meat, etc.) The list can go on but I only just tell people- don't eat it. have no interest in doing so. They don't seem to pry much more than that although when I was younger and this was seen as a "new" thing... I was pressed about it much more often. My mom would just say it's a fad she'll get over it... and I'm proud to say I never did Chat Icon

Re: Vegetarians come in

I tell the truth. I don't go into gory detail, but my usual response is that I saw a video and pamphlets at a friend's house when I was 12 years old and it really shook me up, so I marched home and announced to my family that I was giving up meat NOW and becoming a vegetarian. Which was met with some laughs and being told that I would have to go to my doctor and learn how to balance my diet, AND learn how to cook, because my mother doesn't run a restaurant.

They didn't think I would go through with it, but I did. :) And it made me passionate about cooking and learning where my food comes from, which is important for everyone to know, whether they eat meat or not.

That's my usual answer. It's often followed up with 'are you vegan?' (no) 'do you eat dairy?' (yes, and try to buy from local farms as often as possible, by way of the Union Square Greenmarket) 'do you wear leather or suede?' (no) People like to find a loophole with me, it seems...they want to see an area where I've 'slipped up', so to say.

Usually at that point I tell them how our wedding was completely vegetarian and they STFU. Chat Icon

Re: Vegetarians come in

I usually just say I was always more of a veggie eater than meat and being an animal lover, I just had a hard time ever enjoying it, but that I don't have a problem with others who eat it.

I usually say something truthful, but vague like " for health reasons, environmental reasons or animal rights reasons".

thanks all! i'm going to go with "i don't like it " and leave it there. if they push i'll tell them i read a book and have never looked back.

funny, people also ask if i eat fish (rarely anymore) or chicken/turkey (never), eggs/cheese (also rare, started eating kosher cheese, no renet).

Vegetarians come in

I always say that is for a combination of ethical, environmental and health reasons with ethical concerns as the biggest reason. If they seem interested, I try to provide them with more information about how horrific the meat industry is.

this is my answer. because i ate meat until i was 28 years old, and i always knew if i ever really allowed myself to think about it, i wouldn't eat it anymore. then i gained weight, read what i thought was a weigh-loss book (skinny *****) and that was it. i read all the things i'd never before wanted to think about, but now i'm SO glad i did. i tell them i enjoy being vegetarian and i never really loved meat, anyway.

the main problem i find is that i went vegan for the first few years, and now i'm vegetarian but eat mostly vegan...and for some reason this makes people crazy. if i say i'm vegetarian to people who didn't know i was a strict vegan, i don't get much static. but the people who know i was a strict veg before still bother me to this day, trying to prove to me that veganism is wrong. it used to really upset me, but i'm used to it now so i just let it roll off. you just have to have a thick skin and realize that the reason people would give you a problem is b/c they feel that by not eating meat you are attacking their own morals. once you realize their interrogation is about their own issues and it's not really about you, it's a lot easier to deal with.
