Thyroid Medication
For those of you who take Synthroid (or Levothyroxine) - did your Dr. ever mentioned what foods to avoid (fish/nuts, etc)???? I have it in my head no shellfish, but I saw PCP today and asked her and she said there was nothing to avoid.
Thanks.

Thyroid Medication
There are foods that can decrease the absorption of Synthroid- these foods are called goitrogens and they suppress the function of the thyroid gland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goitrogen
Calcium and Mg should be avoided within four hours of taking the medicine. Although if you have coffee with cream every morning do not worry about it you can adjust the dose to suit your morning coffee.

Re: Thyroid Medication
I take my thyroid med first thing in the morning, and try not to eat for 30 minutes to an hour. I take all other meds, BC and vitamins in the late afternoon/evening.

Thyroid Medication
I stopped taking mine as taking it on an empty stomach first thing in the morning made me feel "off" all day. My doctor said it was alright to stop as my thyroid level was just a bit low. She'll check again in a few moths to see how I've been doing. I feel fine.

Re: Thyroid Medication
I have never been told to avoid any types of food. I do take my synthroid at night right before I go to sleep. Taking it in the morning made me feel weird so doing it at night is better for me. My levels have been stable.

Thyroid Medication
I had always heard that green vegetables in LARGE amounts hinder the absorption of the iodine- things like broccoli and spinach. I eat them but broccoli is no longer my main vegetable.

Same here. The only thing I was told to be careful about was some over-the-counter medicine.
