Anyone have a child with a speech delay and a palate expander?
DD needs a palate expander soon and I've heard it can really hinder speech, even for typical children. She gets speech 3 times a week for a pretty serious speech delay. We're holding off on getting the expander until after school starts and we speak to her therapist but was wondering if anyone had/has a child with a speech delay and a palate expander? If so, how did they cope? Any issues with drooling, etc.? She only needs a top one and the orthodontist assured me that they get used to it within a few days. Any advice is appreciated!

Anyone have a child with a speech delay and a palate expander?
DD had a minor speech delay when she was younger. She was discharged when she aged out from CPSE. There were still some minor issues that we were hoping she would just grow out of with age.
Fast forward a few years - she had to get a palate expander. She had a few issues talking for a week or so, but eventually got the hang of it. Every once in a while her tounge would get caught up in it, but that was usually when she was going to quickly.
Fast forward again - she had her expander removed. Her palate dropped down a lot, and after a few days of adjustment, she actually sounded better with her speech "quirks" then she did before the expander. With her it was all about tounge placement, and the expander made a world of difference by dropping her palate down.
Good luck, and I hope she does well with it !!

Re: Anyone have a child with a speech delay and a palate expander?
Thank you so much!! You made me feel better! I hear all these stories about speech problems, drooling, etc. She already has both issues without the expander and I'm worried about the possible set backs, socially. Thanks again for your input!
