7 year old with severe ADHD questions
My best friends son was diagnosed this past year with ADHD. He has been getting therapy and been on a few medications. They work for a while and then stop. She is a single mom with another child and his behavior is out of control most days. The dr's are talking about putting him into an inpatient place for kids... He had severe delays all throughout his life. Walked late, talked really late, had difficulty eating. He had/has low muscle tone. He curses all the time, doesn't/can't listen, appetite is all screwed up. She is living in a tiny one bedroom apt with her mother, which isn't helping the situation... She works full time. Is there someplace she can go for help with him? Can someone recommend a neuro who is really good with ADHD. He is going for a MRI to see if there is something else going on up there. He is going into 2nd grade this year and she doesn't know if he will make it through the whole year without getting expelled..

I'm not an expert on ADHD, but I did work at South Oaks for 10 years. Perhaps he does need to be admitted for a bit. They will work on adjusting his meds and getting them right. It certainly is a lot for his poor Mom. I hope they figure it out soon, for both of them.

ADHD is often accompanied by ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder).
Does the school have suggestions? Do they have him in the right class? Does he need an aide?
Children are required by law to get the Least Restrictive Environment for education. in-patient would be the most restrictive...self-contained class - a little less...inclusion class...typical class.
The school should be helping.

The ODD was mentioned the other day. He may have that too.. He wasn't this bad this past school year... She has no idea how he will get through this year.. I just spent a few hours with him and he is all over.. Worse then when I saw him a few weeks ago. I can handle him better then his mom and he was listening to me a lot better then his mom. He is so angry with everything and everyone. Today he was goofing off and tried to walk through a glass plate window at a store. Nice bump on his head.. Barely phased him. He is becoming a danger to himself. She will have to see what the school can do, He may have to go to Boces or something.

I am brand new to this whole special needs child thing, however, I have been a social worker for many years.
My thoughts are that a hospitalization could be a blessing.
She can then meet with the social worker who could provide her with resources from everything to a service coordinator/case manager to housing for her and the kids.
I am sure some things may have a wait list, but it's worth it for her to look into.
Would she also let you be involved as an advocate?
I have worked with families in the past whose kids have had issues, and sometimes their reaction is to just bury their head in the sand and do nothing.
Especially if they are already overwhelmed, this is an easy way of thinking maybe it will just all go away/work itself out.

I have been helping her find other resources for him... Some days he is ok but his bad days are becoming more frequent.. I am not ure her insurance would even cover in patient care for him and he can't afford it on her own.. Once school starts, her and I are going to sit down with the dr's and see what the next step is going to be.. I am always there for her and her kids. She wants to get him the most help she can get, but the thought of him going away really scares her..

What about getting him on Medicaid?
Especially if he has such special needs?
I'm not really sure how it works for kids or the specifics, but all of my adult clients have it. Even the ones who have $$$$.
You just need to work with an attorney in many cases who handles long term care stuff.
ETA: I know in a lot of situations, they can also start the application in the hospital.
