Questions about flying with a 1-year old...
If you buy your child a seat, do you HAVE to bring the car seat, or can you just strap the child in with the regular seat belt? I was doing searches online and it says if you buy a seat, a car seat is required, but if you hold on your lap, it is not.
If you hold your child on your lap, are they buckled in as part of your seat belt? What I don't understand is why a car seat would be required for his own seat, and yet not if he is on your lap? It seems more dangerous that way!
And if you do bring the car seat, how the h@#$%&*! do you manage traveling through the airport and security with bags, children, and that monstrous seat?

I never experienced but when my sis and her DH traveled with neice they put her on my BIL lap and he buckled the seat belt around both of them. I never heard of the car seat thing or even saw on plane.

Re: Questions about flying with a 1-year old...
I have flown twice with DS once when he was 10 months and once at 17 months. I didn't buy him a seat, I held him in my lap for the flights. Both times on the way down to NC nobody sat next to us, so he had his own seat and he could sit in it, but for take off and landing he had to sit in my lap

We used this with our DD when she was one for lift off and landing. You put your seatbelt through the straps. Yes if you buy them a seat you need a carseat that is airplane certified.. This is from one step ahead Image Attachment(s):

That's a huge no no and I'm surprised the FA didn't say anything.
A carseat isn't required if you are buying a seat for your child. It's obviously safer in the event of a crash, but it's not mandatory. IF you bring your carseat, it must be FAA approved in order to use it.

That isn't approved for takeoff landing or taxi. It even says so on their site. It's only approved to be used while in the air.

Re: Questions about flying with a 1-year old...
When traveling with a one year old who will have their own seat- you'll want to bring the carseat. The seatbelts used are not appropriate for a child that young. Just like you wouldn't strap a year old infant into a regular car seatbelt- you'll want something with a 5 point harness.
OK- here's my soapbox rant.....
And yes- the lap IS more dangerous. I can't tell you how many times I have traveled with the flight attendant unions to Washington to speak out AGAINST allowing parents to keep their babies on their laps. It is NOT safe.
It's not the parents fault at ALL....The airlines and the FAA give parents a VERY false sense of security that it is a safe way to fly. It's not. The majority of injuries that occur on airplanes are to babies, usually during turbulance and hard landings/aborted take-offs.
It kills me that the FAA requires that I harass people to put their laptop ALL the way under their seat so it is *secured*, but their newborn is just fine sitting unrestrained on their lap.
Oh, and by the way- you are NOT supposed to put the lapbelt around you and your child. If there were a short stop, your body weight would slam against your baby. And Bjorns/Snuglis are not allowed either.
I wanted to add- as a flight attendant (as well as being married to an employee) I could fly FREE, but because of how strongly I feel about not having DD on my lap, I always buy my tickets full fare (it makes my DH crazy) to ensure we each have a seat.

thank you for this information
I just cannot believe that people actually lug that gigantic heavy car seat on vacation with them - I feel like I would need to hire an extra person just to help us or it would be so stressful

But what will you use once you get to your vacation? Won't you need a carseat then?
I'm, assuming you're talking about the convertable seats. I've seen that many parents have a cover for the seat that has straps so you can wear it/carry it on your back. I've also seen convertable seats that actually have wheels and a handle that collapse into the system. I about fell over the first time I saw some dad tooling around the airport with his kid strapped into it!!
WHY couldn't I think of that?!

Well we wouldn't be driving anywhere where we are going so I didn't think I needed it...
it's just funny because all the times I have traveled in my life, I have never seen any family traveling with a car seat. Perhaps this is because I wasn't "looking" for it until I had my own kid.

Re: Questions about flying with a 1-year old...
I'll tell ya.... I used to at parents who would show up at the last minute and we'd have to move people around to get them seats together (I worked for Southwest).
After traveling ALONE with DD my will NEVER happen again. It is HAAAAARD traveling with an infant. There is ALOT of crap to bring.
You would THINK that having flown for 14 years I would KNOW how to fly *properly* and leave enough time. NOPE.... there I was, one of the last ones struggling to get on the plane lugging my diaper bag and baby seat, apologizing like crazy to the flight crew (who, by the way had no idea that I was a fellow crewmember- and I SWEAR, I saw one . ).

Re: Questions about flying with a 1-year old...
I brought my 1 yr old to Florida recently and we bought him his own seat. I did bring the car seat but checked it with the luggage. I was allowed to strap him into just the airplane seat. The seats have so little room to begin with so I couldn't imagine having the car seat with me. We were originally going to bring it onto the plane with us but decided not to.

Wait- was he in the seat for take-off and landing? Or just during the flight? If during t/o and landing- that is a HUGE no-no. Not really yout fault, those flight attendants should have known better.

Re: Questions about flying with a 1-year old...
we're flying to Europe next week, and bringing the car seat. I hate the idea of lugging it with us, but its a long flight and I'm hoping she sleeps through most of it.
Neither of us would get any sleep i(its an overnight flight) f I had to hold her the whole time, and she'd just climb out of the seatbelt restraint.
We also have a rental car, so we'll be using the car seat all week.

Won't you be driving from the airport to wherever you are staying?
We traveled with 2 DC, and two very large carseats (Britax Boulevards). I loosened the straps on one, and carried it like a backpack. The other one I put upside-down over a wheeled carryon bag. I had no problems walking through the airport like that. Plus, I had a laptop in my other hand.
Safety takes a much higher priority than my convenience when it comes to my DC. We have always bought them their own seats, and they have always been strapped into their carseats on the plane.
