Pregnant Cat?

There is a cat that likes to sleep under our car in our driveway. I do see her outside my neighbor's house a lot (who does have cats) but I don't think this is one of their cats. She's really friendly and seems really well taken care of. She's clean and soft and looks well fed. Well, at least I thought she looked well fed. Now that I saw her yesterday, I realize she's very pregnant. I don't know what to do or if there is anything I can do. While she's friendly, she did take a swipe at me when I tried to pick her up. I'm still going to try and find out if it's the neighbors cat, but if it's not, what can I do? Can I call a shelter and have them do a CNR while she's pregnant? Or do we have to wait for the kittens to be born? I'm a little afraid she'll go under the car and have them there. She spends a lot of time there. And another thing is my dog always chases her out from under the car when I take her out for walks. She knows that she's usually under there so the first thing she does when we walk out the door is lunge towards the car. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: Pregnant Cat?

They cannot spay while pregnant if that is what you are asking. Her uterus is carrying the babies and therefore they could not do that while pg. In fact, they cannot even do it too soon after pregnancy. She would have to be months out from having had the litter, as she will be feeding the kittens her milk.

If you bring her to a shelter, she could be put down, esp if she is pregnant. I doubt it is anyone's cat. Maybe someone is feeding her, maybe not. But i doubt if she was someone's she would be unfixed and out getting pg, kwim?

Not sure what to suggest other than trapping her if you can find someone who can take her while she has her kittens and take on that role for the time while she has her babies, etc. Let me think if I can think of anywhere that you can call for help....

You can trap a pregnant cat and have her spayed and have the kittens aborted if you choose to. Save a pet will do it if its early pregnancy, Island Rescue will do it no matter what.

Otherwise you would have to foster her, let her have the kittens, after you pull the kittens when they are eating solids (usually around 5 - 7 weeks) put them where she can't see or have access to them you have to wait 2 weeks for her milk to dry up & then you can have her spayed. You can't leave her out, though, she can get pregnant again before she's done nursing the current litter.

Oh no, I know they couldn't spay now, but I was wondering if there was a shelter that would catch her and keep the cat til she gives birth and then release her. If they are going to put her down, I won't call anyone till afterwards. Chat Icon I definitely don't want that, she's a REALLY sweet cat. And as far as I can tell she's very far along in her pregnancy- that's the only way I'd notice it. I'm no vet and I haven't had cats since I was living with my parents but our cat growing up had kittens and I just recognized the way her stomach hung as being pregnant. I really thought she was just getting fat for awhile. I really don't think it's the neighbors cat either, they are more responsible than that. I did see a food dish outside their yard before so they are probably feeding her.

I'd be willing to take her in, but I have two large dogs and one of them, obviously, likes to chase cats. The other one had a best friend who was a cat so that'd be no problem, but I'm just afraid of something happening to her. I'm going to ask around and see if anyone is willing to take her until she has her kittens and then we can go from there. Maybe they'll even wind up taking her. I do have one person in mind.

Any tips on how to try to catch her?

I didn't realize anyone would do that, esp if they are far along.Chat Icon

I just know that they cannot spay too soon after a litter is born, or if they are in heat b/c they risk hemorhage due to the increased blood flow to the uterus.
