cleaning cat litter while pregnant?
So I have heard in the past and have read on this topic a little bit that pregnant women should not clean cat litter boxes because it might hurt the baby? Does anyone know a little bit more about it? I work at a Veterinarian Hospital so this will def. be an issue.

i think it has something to do what is in the feces
i hear that you shouldnt be around cats much at all

Yes, it does. Its a parasite. I just read an entire article on it and now Im thinking about quitting this job when I start TTC. I wonder if any ladies on this bored that are pregnant have cats..and how they deal with it?

i am sure a bunch of girls do - i wouldnt necessarily quit your job - anyone you can ask at work who was pregnant?

I have a cat and DH cleaned the litter box during my entire pregnancy. I believe you have to ingest the parasite in order to contract it (obviously you have to wash you hands). I had to fill out paperwork for my dr and one of the questions was if I had a cat. They will do extra bloodwork to test for the parasite. Maybe you can wear latex gloves while you work with the litter box and be sure to wash your hand and use sanitizer? BTW- you also have to wash you veggies well because you could contract the parasite through the soil if a cat with the parasite used the dirt as a litter box. I wouldn't worry though. I had no issues during my pregnancy and there are tons of pregger with cats. Life goes on during pregnancy just as ti did before.

No, I only work with one other person and shes never had kids.

we have oddly shaped bathrooms and the litter box is in the corner of our bedroom. we have a cover over it... is that bad too?

Again - I'd ask a professional but this is what I've heard. .
you can use gloves when cleaning it - and it is not supposed to be passed from breathing etc but from touch/ingestion so you basically have to touch your face, mouth, etc right after cleaning the litter box used by an infected animal so I imagine if you are really diligent about washing your hands you will be fine. . again this is just my info (I'm not a medical professional) but I think it is way more rare than it is often made to seem!

It's to prevent from contracting toxoplasmosis, which can be bad for baby.
I wear gloves and wash immediately after.

This is right...you will get a whole bunch of blood work done and if you are not immune to toxoplasmosis then they tell you you cannot change kitty liter. That is what happened to me.
