This makes no sense to me...

Whenever I asked Cai about school (he just started kindergarten), he would only mention these 2 boys.... Let's say, Jordan and Sam.

One of them he had to "make better choices with". Sometimes Sam and Jordan fight with each other.

Day after day, that's all he would tell me about. Sam and Jordan.

I asked him about the other boys in the class.

He to,d me there were none.

His class has 12 girls, and 3 boys!

I know this could happen, but here's what is bothering me.

The class next door has 11 boys and 2 girls!!!!!!

WHY????

They are both afternoon kindergarten classes. Why would they do something like this? Cailen isn't interested in playing with girls. Now he has only 2 boys to get to know. And the poor girls in the other class.

Cai goes to scope. He says there are some oth boys there at least.

I don't understand why his district would do something like this. Does that make any sense at all??? Why wouldn't they evenly disperse boys and girls in both classes???

The definitely seems strange that they would do that. Apparently someone wasn't thinking!!

we live in NY but my friends daughter and her twin are in a kindergarten class with 7 girls and 13 boys. So her two daughters are 2/7 already. I know its not as bad as only 3 boys in your DS's class but still is so strange how the districts make up classes. Sorry your DS isn't with other boys too!

In the district where i work they try to make the ratio of girls to boys even for just that reason! Thats such a strange classroom makeup. For that matter, why didnt they just do an all girls class andn all boys class.

I would make an inquiry as to why.

With all other variables being constant, I'd be surprised if the teachers wouldn't have wanted a more even split.

Unfortunately, that happens to my classes all of the time... it's the effect of lots of electives, AP courses, IEP/504's, etc. at the secondary level, I often get a Regents level class with mostly boys.

Of course, all of those variables are not at work yet for K.

If you want FM me his elem school. I know a K teacher in the district and might be able to get an answer for you.

At one of our PTA meetings toward the end of last year the principal talked a lot about how the APPR state teacher evaluations were going to impact the classrooms, including how kids were placed. She was stressing that she would not be able to accommodate parent requests for specific teachers starting this school year as they had to make sure to evenly split students so that one class didn't have more strong readers or whatever since that will now directly impact the teacher's ratings.

That said, in K where they aren't familiar with each kid's strengths it seems like an odd way to split up the classes and I'd inquire about it.

The only thing I can think of is if your district is like mine and has a K center where all the elementary schools go and then go back to their elementaries for 1st...I know, for example, like, half the class goes to school A and the other half B, etc...but that just makes no sense..and one of the big points of K is socialization!

That's so strange. In my school I've heard that they assign children to certain teachers depending upon their all around level emotionally, academically etc..I believe the kindergarten screening played a big roll in determining kids to teachers in my school. But this is a big difference!
