I just ran my first half marathon.

I ran the Diva Half Marathon yesterday. It was my very first half.

The race was awesome. I can't even explain how amazing I felt when I crossed the finish line. It's surreal. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I was so happy I was a part of it. It's funny because I was always scared of signing up, but this year I just said "The hell with it, I'm signing up. There's no reason I can't do this". I'm so happy I did. You really can do anything you put your mind to. This has been a huge goal in my life and to finish truly made me proud. I really want to run the full marathon now. That's my lifelong goal.

I do have to say though, that I'm kind of sad it's over. It's like a let down. It's weird to explain (I think you runners out there know what I mean). I trained for 3 months so it became a huge part of my life and now that all the excitement of race day is gone, I feel kind of sad. I'm already planning my next race LOL. The second I crossed the finish line, I just knew I needed to sign up for more races. It's so addicting.

I'm alittle sore now, but overall I feel great. I really never stopped running. I think I may have stopped once or twice for 10 seconds for water, but that was it. I can't even believe I ran the entire thing straight through even through a little pain at the end. When I first started running I couldn't even run a minute straight and here I was running 13.1 miles!!!! I am amazed at what I could do!

Here are some pics from the race. The first is my favorite. You can see how happy and excited I was to have finished.

Re: I just ran my first half marathon.

You did so well!!!! Congrats!!!

I also did a half yesterday---Staten Island Half!

It seems like you trained forever for this one race but the good news is you now have a tremendous base. I had my first half back in September 2011 and have done 4 half marathons since. And I didn't even train religiously for yesterday's race but I've never really lost my base. You don't need to be doing 10 mile runs every weekend but as long as you keep running once or twice a week (maybe a long slow 6 mile run on weekend), you'll be able to do this again. And you'll get faster and have a better race next time because you know what to expect!

Running IS SO addictive.

Congrats again!

thank you!!! That's actually my plan- to continue short runs 2-3 times a week at 3-4 miles and one long run on weekends for 6 miles. That should work right. I don't want to lose my endurance. I worked so long to get it up to where it is now.

Congrats to you also!! It really is such a huge accomplishment!!!

Thank you everyone!!!

As far as maintaing, that it exactly what I do...4 miles 2-3 times a week, and then one longer run (6-8+ miles) on the weekend. It definitely helps with keeping up endurance, and then you don't need to spend as long training for subsequent halves.

I did the same thing... but alternated, every other week the long run being 6-8 or 10-12, and did 2-3 short runs of 4-5 miles.

It is addicting! The best part about a half is its not hard to recover from like a full marathon is (requires 26 days recovery!). There are plenty of fun 5ks and 10ks this fall and its the best running weather! So enjoy it! Chat Icon

That's awesome!!

You say when you started you could barely run 1 minute. How did you start out- did you use a program?
