Public school is getting expensive
The way DS' class shares important info from the teachers/school to the parents is through a folder the kids bring back and forth every day.
I swear there is a note/letter in that folder nearly every day asking for money for something or other...
Fundraisers, donations, t-shirts, raffles, etc... the list goes on and on.
Is your school like this too?

Re: Public school is getting expensive
We had a list of things to bring in at the beginning of the year. The only extra item the teacher asked for was high lighters about a week ago. As for fundraisers, they get two scholastic book forms per month, but they are considered one order form. They had a book fair last week. They did a school spirit wear form too. I am a class parent, and we collected 35 per kid for the year. We had to send in a pillowcase and a coffee can for a class project.

Yes. I don't so most of them though. With 2 kids in school there is only so many t-shirts you need. I don't mind the donations, especially if it's something I have in the house.

I don't do the fundraisers, with the exception of purchasing the Kid Stuff coupon book.

INdeed, it does! I don't fall for any of it! I don't do fundraiser or spirit wear or any of those things.
The only things I do contribute to are class parties and gifts for the teachers, depending on how well they are doing their job...

Private school is exactly the same way PLUS tuition every month and mandatory fundraisers and church donations. It is so out of hand

I wouldnt even mind if they were asking for supplies. Its the endless requests for cash...

Re: Public school is getting expensive
Crazy out of control, I joke with DH we just give them out account # so they can suck it dry. On top of the fundraisers, I'm expected to volunteer my time, buy presents for the teacher (she's already had a bday and now the holidays are coming up, plus we "adopted" the music teacher), the class mom takes the guessing out of shopping for gifts since she provided us with an extensive favorites lists from the teachers.
I'm happy to give supplies and to donate my time to benefit the kids (for example I volunteer to read to DD's class) but everything else has become overkill!

Yes, it's the same for my oldest's kindergarten.
I buy a few things, but throw out most of the forms that come home. It's ridiculous how much they ask us for.

same here. We get the letters too about fundraisers, etc. but we don't do them. We have only done like one or two but most we just don't do.

Yes, we get a lot of those things. I've heard that kids feel bad when the products are distributed and they don't get any. That broke my heart. It is expensive but my expenses have decreased b/c of DS not being in daycare anymore. I do not buy things that we just won't use. I try to be practical but support the school.

Yes, yes yes! My DS school, only has 1 mandatory fundraiser, but all the other things that DS wants to be a part of, book fairs, flea market, class trips, class parties, school events, etc! And mandatory volunteer hours. I am not complaining BC we are really loving this first year of school but if I did the math, and add tuition and uniforms to the mix, its sickening!

Re: Public school is getting expensive
My kids go to a private school and aside from tuition, there are NO mandatory fundraisers, no mandatory volunteer hours, etc. You don't have to contribute to the Church either, but it would be dumb not to because you save quite a bit on tuition (tuition is much less for those who support the parish (i.e, $600/yr).
But I do hand over money a lot! School lunches are $4.50 for the meal!! Class field trips about 3 times or more a year (they are usually only a few dollars, but I have 2 in the school now). Class collections for teacher gifts. Donations for parish outreach (of course, not required, but we do anyway). class parties are all done on a volunteer basis.
I just keep telling myself that their education is not an expense, it's an investment.

Distribution for our school fundraisers is not during class. You would think they would all be like that. How are the kids getting all that junk home from the fundraisers anyway?
Aside from book orders, which are put in the child's backpack, which I buy from because the books are cheap.

On book day they compare everything on the bus!!!! I have had to pick some things up at the school but some things came home in the backpack. They had an author signing books and DS knew exactly who ordered. We already have her books and I did not order just to get one with the person's signature. DS keeps saying that we need one now.

Re: Public school is getting expensive
We've gotten the notes for gifts, for projects. What really irks me is the money they ask for for field trips when they kids are going someplace thats free and the money that they expect you to pay to make projects for class which have specific lists of supplies you need to go out and buy to make the project. The last project list cost me about $40.

I had the exact cost and issue with my DS field trip...they walked to the local FREE park and it was $40.00 for "cost of supplies"

Whoa, whoa, whoa..as a teacher, this is mortifying..in the past, I've had a couple of K parents bring in a cake for me (which I thought was sweet but SO unnecessary and NOT promoted by me in ANY way) and a LIST for the holidays?! Wow! I would NEVER..I like it when kids make me a card or something..anything else is icing, IMO...wow..
