Kindergarten registration ?

Does anyone know if I will be able to register my son for K while in contract, but prior to closing on a house? I am looking at the Smithtown school district. Thanks.

I would call the school district and ask. In my district you needed to have DCs birth certificate, a "current" gas/oil/water bill in your name along with a mortgage, tax, or rent agreement to register. They specify that the utility bill must be dated within 60 days of the date of registration too.

I think it is to prevent fraud - i.e. a person goes in contract, but then decide not to go through with the purchase of the house. But because I timed things "right" I gave the contract and got my kid enrolled into a district with no intent to actually move there. KWIM?

Thanks, I'm going to call. It looks like we won't close until the end of April, because the sellers are snowbirds. I was concerned about being able to attend K orientation, since we may not be able to register in time for it. Guess we will wait and see, thanks.

While its nice to attend K orientation it isn't necessary. You can wait to register your DS until after you close.

You can also call them and explain the situation. In your contract should be an "on or about" date for closing. If you show the district that you are 99% committed to this house they shouldn't have an issue with you beginning the registration process.

I registered DD for our new district and she started school here before we closed on the house. I was able to show my contract for initial registration, then had 30 days afyer the on or about date to show closing papers then had another 30 after closing to show a utility bill (LIPA, fios, water) to prove residence.

I registered (in Smithtown SD) while in contract on our house. I needed a letter from my realtor stating that we were in contract and were intending to reside at that property. They didn't give me any problems.

fyi, Kindergarten registration has already begun for the district. Our school starts next week. Registration schedule

My daughter did not attend K orientation since it happened months before we knew we were moving to the district (we closed in Aug) and she was fine.

Still waiting for the final revisions to be made to our contract, hopefully we will have things finalized next week. I know we have missed the start of registration, and I think we are zoned for Mt Pleasant as long as everything works out. Looks like we can just go through Central Registration once we have our paperwork in order. I really hope we get this!!!
