I feel like so much of it depends on the cleanliness practices in the classroom. Here's what they did before snack and lunch in my DS's pre-K--

- everyone walks to the bathroom together, in pairs, holding hands (as they cough and wipe their nose, lol)
- everyone takes turns washing in the bathroom sinks
- everyone walks back to the classroom together, in pairs, HOLDING HANDS AGAIN (as they continue to cough and wipe their nose... why did they even bother washing their hands?)

Needless to say, all the kids were ALWAYS sick in that classroom.

The following year, in his K class, the teacher enforced use of hand sanitizer before snack and lunch. Hardly any illnesses outside of minor runny noses all year.

My DD is in nursery school now, and I've learned my lesson. I pack a Wet Ones antibacterial wipe in her snack bag and I've instructed her to use it even if they did their trip to the bathroom for handwashing.

I agree.

In K, The teacher had the kids one by one drink from the water fountain everyday after gym. And they were not allowed to use the sanitizer in the classroom.
If he didn't wash his hands on his own then it didn't happen be cause it was not enforced.
He learned the hard way I guess. But I'm happy.

I'm so afraid to jinx myself by answering this! He's been in daycare since 8 weeks old. That first year was rough. He got extremely sick a few times in the beginning.

He now gets sick once a year, usually in the summer. But, seriously sick, and then is fine all year. When he was 2 he had a bad case of croup in August. Same thing at age 3 ( he did get hit with a bug in the winter that yr), and right before pre K he was sick for a week. Last summer he got that same thing plus a staph infection. It's like his summer illness crams in a years worth of sickness in a week!!!!

Not yet-fingers crossed.

I told DD there is a trophy at the end ofthe year for kids who don't miss any school. She really wants that trophy.

Man! 2 weeks later and Claire missed her first day. Jinx! Owen had a stomach bug and Claire got it. So, for this year, she has missed 1 day.

I bought her a trophy that says awesome attendance because man she really tried!
