Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

I'm at my wits end. My dd gets sick every couple of weeks either with a cold, cough, stomach bug all with fevers. If it was just a plain cold I wouldn't mind but she gets fevers. I get worried that her immune system is not working properly.

I thought that by now with being in preschool and pre k that her immune system would get stronger, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

I was just wondering if this is the norm.

My kids have been in daycare since 16 months old. DD hasn't missed a day all year, 1 day last year in pre-K. DS is still a thumb suckerChat Icon Chat Icon and he missed 3 days this year. I think he gets everything because of his thumb.

Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

no-he was out once for a cough-i did not know if it was asthma or not and did not want to chance it. he was never in daycare or preschool.
i think some kids just get sick and other's don't. i am one of 7, some of us were always absent with ear infections, strep-others had perfect attendance.

Not yet-fingers crossed.

I told DD there is a trophy at the end ofthe year for kids who don't miss any school. She really wants that trophy.

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

DD missed the whole second week of school bc she had strep. She had a 24 hour virus in December but luckily it was over the weekend. That's about it so far.

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

Yes! My kindergartener, who has been in some sort of school since 2.5, has been sick constantly. I'm not sure why this year is so different, but she seems to always be sick...colds, stomach bugs, coughs...we haven't hit anything too serious yet, but she has been out probably about 7 times this year. Before this, she really wasn't ever sick.

My kids are in first grade now, but i K they caught everything under the sun - missed 10 days EACH last year. This year has been much better.

every week he gets a bad cold Chat Icon it is ridiculous! I am also at my wits end. He gets such bad ones and then gets so red b/t his lip and nose, so he looks worse then he is. We had is tonsils out in August (he kept getting strep) and I am so glad I did b/c I feel like these bad cold would turn into strep each time if we hadn't.

No, my DD doesn't get sick a lot. But this has been the WORST sick season I can remember. I literally cannot keep track of how many cancelled plans we have had due to someone getting sick.

No, my DS was in K last year and rarely got anything more than a runny nose or mild cough.

Now when he was in nursery school and pre-k, FORGET IT. He was sick nonstop. Especially pre-k for some reason.

Yes, quite frequently with a cough/runny nose/sore throat. But our school is 1,000 degrees so it's just a germ festering environment in there.

Same here -

DS was sick ALOT in K! It really felt like a continuous effort to keep him healthy.

1st grade - Not one sick day yet!

Pre-K and day care, he was randomly sick but nothing like Kindergarten.

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

No - Thank God we have yet to have any real sickness here with my K DS. I will say he did get sick alot in the beginning of nursery school and has been sick really only 1 or 2X per year since then.

That said - I give alot of the credit to his teacher. She has a toddler at home so tries to keep everyone healthy - she is diligent about the kids washing/purell/wiping their hands - it makes a huge difference I think!

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

DD was not sick one day this year until Christmas. Since then, she has been sick 3 TIMES!! First a virus that's like the flu but not, then an ear infection, then strep. I figured she would have built up an immune system since she was in daycare since 8 months. Seems like everything she's getting lately is viral.

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

not horrible yet...nothing worse than in PreK or other. We got hit with the fever virus/minor flu and the stomach bug. Both wiped him out for 3-4 school days. Little colds - but really isn't too bad. I have 3 kids so someone is always bringing home something. Other kids got similar and only missed 1-2 days. He is my one who always takes longest to kick things and he never seems to get it on the weekend so he always misses more school than the others!

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

So far the only thing DD caught was an ear infection over Christmas break. Otherwise, she has been pretty healthy.

She started nursery school at 3, not sure if that helped her immune system or not.

I will say both 1st graders at our bus stop have missed a TON of school this year (at least 8-10 days each) due to sickness.

My dd used to get sick every few weeks. I now limit her dairy and sugar intake, and things are so much better!

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

Yes, DD was sick maybe 2 times a year maybe 3 total each year. She wasn't in daycare but we were always out at play places, did 3 years of nursery school (2yr, 3 yr, prek) and we always did classes like gymnastics etc. Since starting we have had mono, 2 virsuses and sinus infections.

I will be honest I think it is from less handwashing and kids going to school who shouldn't be there. In her preschool they had sinks in the classroom and the kids washed 2- 3 times a class. Now I gave her sanitizer in both her lunch and snack bags bc DD says they use wipes but don't wash often. She told me once when I asked if she remember to use the sanitizer before she ate that the lunch person told her it was for AFTER she ate Chat Icon Chat Icon

Dd#2 has been sick more as well but her new preschool washes at bathroom time but uses wipes before snacks. Hoping it will get better. Also they are constantly asking for more boxes of tissues bc I hear most of the class is needing the constantly. The school has had to send home reminders that say...not sure if you should send your child please DON'T if they have.....Chat Icon

No. But to think she passes it on to my youngest who,has been sick a lot.

My oldest hasn't missed a day so far.

My youngest is also in school, so she gets germs all over, the poor kid.

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

This year has been bad. A few colds and a few weeks ago she was wheezing and on put on a nebulizer. Last week and this week missed a total of 3 days of school. She had a fever for 3 days then broke out in a rash. Diagnosed with roseola and to top it off she has strep.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

I feel like so much of it depends on the cleanliness practices in the classroom. Here's what they did before snack and lunch in my DS's pre-K--

- everyone walks to the bathroom together, in pairs, holding hands (as they cough and wipe their nose, lol)
- everyone takes turns washing in the bathroom sinks
- everyone walks back to the classroom together, in pairs, HOLDING HANDS AGAIN (as they continue to cough and wipe their nose... why did they even bother washing their hands?)

Needless to say, all the kids were ALWAYS sick in that classroom.

The following year, in his K class, the teacher enforced use of hand sanitizer before snack and lunch. Hardly any illnesses outside of minor runny noses all year.

My DD is in nursery school now, and I've learned my lesson. I pack a Wet Ones antibacterial wipe in her snack bag and I've instructed her to use it even if they did their trip to the bathroom for handwashing.

Does your kindergartener get sick a lot?

For the first time my son got the croup, he then got it twice more. So he ended up missing seven days of school.

No...last year DS was in K and he was sick twice and this year DD is in K and missed no school. DS is in 1st and same thing.

I am obsessed with them washing there hands though. Every time we come home from somewhere I make them clean there hands and I think that helps.
