Re: Anyone change jobs purely for salary increase?

I did this a few times when I was first out of school. I was always looking when I was working.. trying to upgrade.

I haven't done it in years.. but I do wish I'd done it at my last job. I had a couple of opportunities and stayed because I was afraid of leaving my comfort zone.

I've had a few opportunities recently.. but I am old enough now that I have to consider ALL things.. not just money.. so I haven't had anything come up that would compel me to leave a place that I truly enjoy.

I can give you the opposite end of it. I changed jobs and took a pay decrease (not much, only 5k). It's in the same field and same area. I did it for two big reasons: security and I was much happier where I am now.

Yes a few times. Why stay if you can make more doing the same job?

I did it years ago and it was a huge mistake. Was offered a job with a much higher salary, but it wound up that the working conditions were awful - bosses screaming and yelling - no wonder they were offerieng so much $$$ to get someone to stay. I had left a good job where I was very happy. I wound up quitting the new job after less than a week.

If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Re: Anyone change jobs purely for salary increase?

I didn't but my husband did and honestly, it just wasnt the right move for him. His circumstances were a little different, he absolutely loved where he was working but he felt like he should make a move to get a bigger bump and so he did. Its been a couple of years now and he still regrets it terribly. He knows a couple of past co-workers who had really gone up the ladder at his old company and are making close to the same as him so he feels like maybe jumping the gun for simply more money wasn't the right move. He was just much happier where he was, the environment, the hours, the people. He is trying to work his way back there now since he left on very good terms and we both have our fingers crossed that it will happen. His happiness and quality of life was just much much better back then. When we think about how much more he is making, he is also traveling, and working so many more hours so it really wasn't the right move for him. So for his case, the grass definitely wasn't greener...but that's not to say that's everyone's situation. On a positive note, he has gained a tremendous amount of experience that he would have never been exposed to had he stayed.

Re: Anyone change jobs purely for salary increase?

Every time I've ever changed jobs has been for a salary increase. I've been doing the same thing for close to 20 years, first as a college drop out and now as a college graduate.

And they've never been 'mistakes' per se.. the largest pay jump was into a place that was GOD AWFUL and I was only there 13 months, and that was because I won't leave a job without working there at least a year. That company folded shortly after I left...

But it wasn't a mistake, because I got the next job through a connection I made at the previous one, and that job was so slow and mind numbing that I was able to go to school full time and finish getting my bachelors degree with a minimal amount of stress, which led to my current job which was a great decision and a better company/situation/benefits etc. than I've ever had before.

I did and it was a great move. Better company, better boss, better benefits. Same work schedule (more or less). I do miss the old company, but his was a great switch.

My salary went up 30k and that is NOT including bonus and overtime. With overtime I will make 50k (or more) than my old job, doing, basically, the same thing.

Me too! I was there for 6 months. Worst professional experience ever. I cried every day and spent my time applying to help wanted ads.

Re: Anyone change jobs purely for salary increase?

I am looking to do that now. My goal is to find a job that pays what I make now, but also the bulk of family health insurance (1/2 my check each week goes to that now). That would absolutely make me consider leaving.

I also work in a VERY stressful environment, and am looking to go somewhere a little more supportive and with more like-minded individuals to myself.

I haven't but anyone I know who did regretted it. Just remember that money isn't everything.

My wish came true. Chat Icon

Actually I am taking a slight paycut, but with what they are paying for insurance, I will still be bringing more home.

I will also probably do some limited P/T work for my current employer for extra $$$.

I'm also going to see if I can keep my phone/lap top out of that for the time being so I don't have to pay for those.

I'm not really worried about not liking it. I also am leaving things off that if needed, I could probably always go back to my current employer.

This, except i'm in a different field. I would love to be making more money, but glad that I don't have the stress anymore.

Me, too. I left a very high paying (but high stress, long hours) law job to switch to real estate sales for job satisfaction, quality of life reasons. That was almost 3 years ago and I have never looked back. No regrets! At this stage of my life, the change was the right one to make and I am much happier, despite some financial tradeoffs.

I don't really know anyone who ever regretted leaving a high paying job for something more fulfilling or less stressful, but I know plenty of people who are working in very high paying positions but are miserable. A salary increase sounds good on paper, always, but I would make sure the other aspects of the position are a good fit, too. Take it from someone who knows: Making a lot of money isn't a benefit if you have no time to enjoy it (or are too miserable to do so!).

slightly different situation...I have always loved the company I work for but a few times I was offered considerably more to do the same job at a different company. Both times, my company counter-offered and I stayed. So sort of the best of both worlds!

Anyone change jobs purely for salary increase?

I've done both - left a higher paying job that I hated for a slightly lower paying job and left a lower paying job that I liked for a $35k increase. I'm happier - I feel like I am more challenged and more importantly I feel that my new job appreciates me and my skills, which they show by paying me well. Lots of luck! FM with any questions.
