Well this may explain things

I have complained here a handful of times, that despite my best efforts with eating and exercise, that I haven't been able to lose the extra few pounds I'm carrying around. Well I had a physical last week and asked the Dr. to check my thyroid. And I was right. My level was 7.4 and normal is 0.5-6.0. Some Dr's even suggest it should be under 3. So the Dr. has prescribed synthroid.
Does anyone have any experience with this? Part of me is just very reluctant to take something I may need to be on for the rest of my life. Are there any dietary ways I can deal with it?

Re: Well this may explain things

Thanks Beth, I just read through your post. I'm hoping the medicine has such a positive effect on me. I've been feeling sluggish, and quite honestly, a little depressed. It's crazy to think that may all be because of a thyroid issue. I'm going to start the medicine and see how I feel on a couple of weeks. The Dr. wants to test me again in 2 months.

Re: Well this may explain things

Those are both thyroid symptoms

Ask to be tested for thyroid antibodies

It's important to know if you are hypo or have hashimoto

Keep me posted. I'm 7 weeks in to treatment. You need at least 4-6 to see the results start

Re: Well this may explain things

Would the treatment be different of it was Hashimoto? Should I not take the medicine until I know for sure?

Re: Well this may explain things

Take the synthroid. Having hoshimoto or not won't change your treatment.

I was hyperthyroid with Graves' disease. I had radioative iodine treatment to destroy my thyroid which has now caused me to go hypo (easier to treat - that eas the goal) i still have Graves' disease bc that's what the antibodies are. I am treated with synthroid.

Also I know numbers are "normal" up to 6.0 but in my own experience, staying between 2 & 3 feels best. Not All drs go by how you feel and I my treat numbers. Just try to be on top of that.

Good Luck :)

Re: Well this may explain things

hashimoto's doesn't change the treatment- but you need to avoid iodine when you have it

I was taking alot of supplements- kelp, iodine all need to be avoided
